it's all about going to the doc nowadays and telling him your probs. then he gives you a magic little $50 pill from the drug companies. Then you go home and eat this little pill for 2 months which usually causes all kind of side effects, so you go back and he gives you another little $100 dollar pill to cover up the symptons of the $50 dollar pill that he wants you to keep taking.Instead he could just send you home with a $40 dollar bag of weed and probably never have to see you again.

who ever wrote this article has no idea what they are talking about. Talk to a doctor or nurse and really find out what they think about weed and what a non problem it is. SERIOUSLY. You are out of touch with reality.

The reason the government should get into the pot business? 4 usable raw products are made by pot.
1) Food: Hemp seed oil is one of the most nutritious edible oils. Entire societies live on marijuana seeds, they are extremely high in Omega complex oils without the cholesterol and chemicals of fish
2) Fuel: Not only is Hempseed oil a clean burning biodiesel, but the tightly woven cellulose of the stalks can be fermented into ethanol. This process makes nearly 20 times the ethanol of normal corn fermentation
3) Fiber: Good old cellulose. Paper, clothing, building material, furniture. YOU NAME IT and it can probably be made from hemp. The longer the fiber the stronger the fabric. Hemp has the longest fiber of any stalk plant. Building material made with hemp is on average 8 times stronger than lumber. Also, no deforestation involved. If we took half of the fields growing cotton and grew hemp we would meet our fiber needs and stop the destruction of the rainforest.
4)Medicine: Anxiety is not a "vague" diagnosis. Generalized Anxiety disorder is a real medical condition for which Xanax is prescribed. There were 22,000 Xanax related ER visits in year 2000 that could've been prevented with med marijuana because its LD50 is higher than anyone can possibly consume. It has been used to treat a plethora of different illnesses and prevent scores of others (it raises you t-lymphocyte count). People are now successfully treating some serious forms of autism, not to mention major depressive disorders.
THE EVIDENCE IS OVERWHELMING that pot is NOT BAD. For our legislators to ignore us as they have for years is an ATROCITY to our forefathers and the very dream AMERICA was founded upon. I am a thinking person with an IQ of 162 who smokes marijuana at every chance I get. I still hold a job and have a 3.4 GPA, not to mention loads of scholarship opportunities.
BY MAKING IT ILLEGAL YOU ARE GIVING THE CRIMINALS A WAY TO MAKE MONEY AND A REASON TO HURT OTHERS. YOU ARE PERSECUTING THE UNDESERVING AND REWARDING THE TRULY EVIL FOR NO REASON.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Scary isn't it? Seems that we don't even understand our own Substance Control Act - 812.B.3 States, "The State of current scientific knowledge regarding the drug or other substance", 812.B.5 States, "The scope, duration, and significance of abuse, and 812.B.6... "What, if any, risk there is to public health"
And so... The swiss have found that it actually PROMOTES the growth of neurons in the brain - the basis for intelligence, Spain has used it to cure 3 forms of very agressive brain cancer, and Dr. Tashkin, as commisioned by the father of the Drug War (Ronald Reagan) found that there is ZERO, no link whatsoever to lung cancer. I could go on and on... pathetic. CAM

I'm for most of what you're saying, but the sake of being anal: technically hempseed only has ALA Omega 3's, and the human body can only convert small amounts of that to DHA and EPA Omega 3's, which also very essential. Cold water fish are one of the few sources that actually have decent amounts of DHA and EPA Omega 3's.

They are afraid that if medicinal marijuana was available the pharmacutical companies sales would go down because not only can it be used to cure and ease pain in one ailment it can do the same with hundreds of diseases with no ill side effects except maybe having the mad munchies. Most prescription drugs that are prescribed are to help reduce the side effects of another prescription drug that can cause strokes, heart attacks, blood clots, tumors, etc Even over the counter tylenol can kill you if you take too many. No one has ever died from smoking cannabis. It is a natural remedy put here on earth since the begining of time. There is plenty of scientific research proving its benefits, and believe it or not it even aids in treating asthma.

Ron Brooks with the National Narcotics Officer Association says, "You can ask any ER doctor, or ER nurse, EMS worker, fire fighter, cop, teacher and say,'do you think this is a good idea to legalize marijuana?' And they will tell you that is the dumbest idea they have heard. Absolutely not."
I have spoken with and can provide written testimony of ER doctors and nurses, EMS workers, cops and teachers who not only think it is a "good idea" to legalize marijuana but that it should be one of America's top priorities.

If the economy is driving our state budget to the break why not legalize medical marijuana and tax the growers and despensary's accordingly and generate income that can be placed towards our state budget. This would also decrease cost and increase man hours in our courts and police agencies since you won't be wasting these resources on sick people and worry about the real criminals.

this sounds like a fiscally responsible idea! i mean if 14 other states are doing this why not do it across the board. it would be a good tax revenue and would free up the jails and prisons. and make these places for the real criminals. go for it illinois!!

I am an RN/BSN with chronic pain from spinal cord and nerve damage after catching a patient. I am on several legal drugs much stronger than marijuana. Oxycodone and morphine are just two. I strongly believe marijuana helps with chronic pain as well as the nausea associated with the other meds. It helps potentiate the effects of the other medication so that you don't have to take so much of the hard stuff to control your pain to a reasonable level. It would be a God send if they would legalize it here.

Medical marijuana needs to be legalized in Illinois. My mom has breast cancer and gets extremely sick from her chemo treatments. Marijuana is the only thing that helps her to eat, sleep, and not be constantly sick to her stomach. Of course, she is doing this illegaly, but she is not a criminal. Just another victim of cancer. I hope people understand how important medical marijuana is to alleviate symptoms of disease. It needs to be legalized so that my mom, your mom, your sister, and all the others with cancer or other diseases can legally and safely smoke this plant (that God put here for a reason) to relieve the pains of disease. With all of the negativities that come with prescription pills including addiction, damage to organs over time, and possible overdose, you would think that it seems so simple to just legalize marijuana. No one has ever overdosed or died from marijuana, but there are still those who are dying from disease. Don't you at the very least want these people to function and enjoy their last days here with us? Cause I sure as heck do.

I used to live in Berkeley and relocated to Naperville, Illinois 3 years ago. I suffer from severe and cronic back pain (sciatica) and sometimes I cannot even sit and watch TV, having to lay down on a heating pad on my back. I constantly take painkillers just because I live here. My doctor in California recommended Marijuana and I have been vaporizing it for many years, it was the best thing for my pain, WITHOUT A DOUBT. Here in Illinois, I am scared of buying for many reasons: Quality sucks, fear of violence having to buy from drug dealers, and fear of being arrested. The situation can no longer stay like this, not just in Illinois, but FEDERALLY. It's time for the politicians look after the people and not just their own interests.

They cant legalize it wrote:
They cannot legalize it because:
1) Pot has seeds which enables anyone to grow it. Imagine beer having seeds in a can. Coffee won't grow well and peanuts take too much room or people would grow them and avoid taxes.
2) Good quality pot does not have seeds but is also difficult to grow with being pollinated.(which causes seeds) It's reported that govt. pot is crap!
3) There are hundreds of strands of pot and to find one that doesn't warp your mind but eases your pain would be difficult to keep from cross-pollinating.
4) The govt. already makes lots of money with forfeiting cars, boats and homes of people who get caught with pot. Why do they need to get into the business?
1. How does tabacco pollinate then? I really don't know, but I know that the gov would have a way to 'sift' out the seeds as we do.
2. There is good quality pot with seeds and if done right can produce good to low quality pot, example: Marlboro marijuana as apposed to "GPC Marijuana" or "USA", ect.
3. If there's a bad strand then "recall", it's not like we can sue for cigarette burns and houses burning down because of them or people injuring themselvels for being 'too f*d up'.
4. The gov. would make A LOT more money by taxing, lisencing, and and giving people permits to grow and smoke marijuana. In just Illinois prisons alone, approx. 1/3 of the prison population is of marijuana users or dealers that have never committed a violent crime; Illinois would save over 3 million a year, don't belive me? do the math by going to the IDOC website and take the annual ammount of each facility, devide it by three, then add up each amount, the results are shocking.
