no excuse for what happened but this is a man who was in a severe accident, lost a limb, is a disabled veteran and battles a terrible drinking problem. Is loved and cared for by his family.

People who committ violent acts are not wonderful people. Do you think what you wrote gives him an excuse to hit the son in the head with ax? Maybe his family is just enabling him to be a nasty drunk with anger issues.
