It seems to me that excuses overwhelm common sense or positive actions .
I don't know about life on the streets but I do know about living in the Black Rock area as a kid. I also lived on Van Zant St. in E. Norwalk , not exactly high roller district.
I know about finding a job when life is tough on the streets but the U.S. Army took me.
I don't know about getting busted with drugs but I did get busted for alchohol possession at 19.
Now I'm living a comfortable life more in a Naugatuck style than in a Darien style , far away.
Just too many excuses for me.

GET REAL wrote: that just because they got money or no record or whatever it may be and they can find a decent job that pays more than minimum wage does not make them better than anyone else. Even some people who have college degrees now and days can't find a decent job because it's not about what u know its about who u know. So if we go to college and still can't find a decent job because we don't live in Greenwich or Darien and we don't know people who own companies or maybe its because we are not the color they want us to be or don't speak as proper as they want us to, that don't mean we are not educated but to ignorant people like you writing all these dumb ass comments we are nothing. Therefore, this give us that urge to want to go and sell drugs or do illegal activities because we don't even get a first chance most of the time, yet alone a second, that's out of the picture right? But it's ignorant, selfish, no good, know it alls like you that need to become more educated about what goes on on the streets. You sit and talk and say "O well just stay out of trouble that's all." That is not all and its easier said than done. When you wake up to the streets everyday and got cops on your back for any little move you make even if you are not doing anything illegal. Come live the street life for just a day is all it will take to turn your ignorance around. But no u are too good for that right? You have better things to do with your life and your time than try to see the truth of things. Anyway, no matter how you feel we are going to keep fighting for those who are in prison being treated like animals. I'm not saying we should have them in a five star hotel but they shouldn't be sleeping on floors either. And to top it off its not only your dam tax dollars, those of us who care about these people pay taxes to and probably more than you, so get real! So while we keep standing up for our rights and fighting for the ones we love just keep your shit hole that you call a mouth closed. No matter what we will fight till something is done so no matter what you say, we don't give a dam so don't waste your breath. Maybe its the "poor me, blame others for my misfortune" attitude that is your downfall. I never had things handed to me. I had to work hard for what I have. I always had the support of my parents to push me in the right direction. I hope you don't spread that lousy attitude of yours to your kids or they will never make anything out of their lives. Way to go!!!!

These comments are a massive display of pure ignorance from people who think that everyone in jail is there for rape, murder, drug dealing or child molesting, robbery, etc. That is NOT the case--not at all. Many of these people are in jail for minor, victimless "crimes"--like unpaid parking tickets, minor drug possesion, technical probation violations, "white collar crime", etc. The punishment, at any rate, is in being incarcerated, away from family and friends, with no freedom. It is NOT supposed to be inhumane treatment, shame and humiliation, inadequate nutrition, rodent infested cells, non existent medical care, sexual abuse and rape by guards and other inmates alike, etc. Prisons and jails should be reserved for people who pose a TRUE threat to society--dangerous, violent criminals who show no remorse or rehabilitative potential. Being exposed to this kind of environment does not rehabilitate, it destroys the soul and causes bitterness, resentment, fear and anger to brew within the person. This country locks up a greater percentage of its people than any other--and you all call for more more more prisons. I don't doubt that there are many of you here who have done something at one point in your life that could get you locked up--DWI, cheating on your taxes, smoking pot, writing a bad check, forgetting to pay a ticket, etc--but you were fortunate enough to not get caught. A jailer once told me that she always tried to remember that those inmates she gaurded were different from her only in the respect that they got caught and she didn't. Justice does not always have to mean inhumane torture in a prison cell, no matter what the crime. Intelligent societies value ALL their citizens--even those not as perfect as you all, who have never done anything wrong--and seek to restore the person to society as a functional being, not a jaded, bitter monster. Go on and throw those stones, you who are without sin.

I'm appalled at what i read here! why don't we just cut to the chase & bring back lynching & carry guns; so when we see that troubled teenager, that's {who knows}experimenting with drugs, we can just shoot the little s.o.b. & put "it" out of "it's" misery! And those of us who feel omnipetent can be in charge. How bout that, huh?.

videophotog wrote: We need someone like Sheriff Joe Arpaio here in Connecticut: Sheriff Joe is perhaps best known for his famous Tent City Jail which houses over 2,000 inmates. Meddling federal judges had decreed that the County's jails were "overcrowded." (Tell that to law-abiding citizens in the area, who live in much more crowded housing than do the prisoners.) Instead of bowing to pressure from the federal government and releasing thousands of prisoners, Arpaio put up surplus Army tents next to one of the jail buildings, and surrounded the area with barbed wire. It would be a massive understatement to say that Arpaio doesn't believe in coddling criminals. He wants his jails to be what jails were intended to be - a deterrent to crime. He wants his "guests" to be so happy to leave his facilities that they will never want to return! The good sheriff follows the law to the letter. He provides food, clothing and shelter to the inmates. Anything beyond that is not required and is not provided. He has taken away "comforts" that are common in jails and prisons across our nation. For instance, Sheriff Joe has eliminated smoking and porno magazines in all eight County jails. If someone can show him that prisoners have a constitutional right to lung cancer or porn, I am sure he will reinstate these things. He also took away weight-lifting equipment. Sheriffs and wardens have long complained that prisoners spend hours every day "bulking up" with weights and becoming extraordinarily strong. Jail and prison guards don't have the luxury of hours of weight training every day. And the result has often been that super-strong inmates have attacked and over-powered guards. Instead of complaining about this, Joe did something about it. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do something useful with their time. They do free work on county and city projects. Then he started the first female chain gangs in the country so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination. He also started the nation's first juvenile chain gang. He cut off cable TV because all the prisoners watched were R and X-rated movies. Then he found that there was a ridiculous federal law that requires cable TV in jails. So he hooked the cable TV back up, and now only allows the Disney Channel and the Weather Channel. When he was asked why he allowed the Weather Channel he replied, "So they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs." He removed coffee from the jails because it has no nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back." He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape to play in the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a Democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. Recently when temperatures reached a new record of 116 degrees, inmates were allowed to lie in their bunks in the Tent City Jail instead of working. "It feels like we are in a furnace," complained one inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane." Joe Arpaio told all of the inmates: "It's120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths!" Arpaio heads the nation's third largest Sheriff's Office, which employs over 3000 people. The County he serves is the size of Rhode Island. There should be more Sheriffs like Joe Arpaio. When are people ever going to learn and face reality.
