LOCAL: United against Meijer in Lyon Township

“We are hopeful as we manage through the approval process, and plan to build a store in Lyon Township.”

The Martin family has operated a hardware store in South Lyon for almost 40 years, the place where locals go for a garden hose or a wheelbarrow. via LivingstonDaily

I applaud the residents for standing up for their health safety and welfare. Big companies today think they can walk all over the little people all the time. Cities and Townships need to hear the residents clearly more often. And if the big boxes can hear from what I have read about this issue. The people in South Lyon Do not want you there.

Michael, you make a good point. There are only two reasons why the Martin family still has a small business after 40 yrs...either they've deliberately planned to stifle their growth & are happy with just a small company OR their own mis-management has prevented their growth. Either way, I can't feel sorry for them if they don't have a business plan developed that is able to sustain in a competitive environment.

Personally, I am all for the Meijer. The retail & services in this town are simply not adequate for a population that's growing. I try to shop local but frequently find that the stores here just don't stock what I want. I am not going to compromise and start buying items I didn't really want just to convenience the local business owner. As a result,I have to drive 15 miles out of town to purchase what I need.

I hear the complaints of the economy taking a dive, look at all the jobs this potential site would have! From the younger generation to our senior citizens. Jobs are hard to find these days, why vote them away? Look at our welfare lines and active faith lines. They are growing by the day.

You have had local business milking a monopoly here for years. I am all for increased competition and choice.

And who is going to go work at Meijers full time anyways? The only people who will go there are high school students.

Just how many people living here actually work here?
