Dell should be sued and held liable for the breach of contract!!!!
North Carolina should be made whole and the employees should receive pay until they find another job or career.
this action by Dell is going to bring devastation to the local economy.
Dell should be held liable for the next 40 years, the same amount of time they were going to receive tax incentives!!!!!

How can you sue them for "breach of contract" when the contractual terms specify that they can do exactly what they are doing? They are returning the incentive money (at least to the city -- I suppose that whether they return it to the state depends on the specific provisions of the incentive scheme). They do not owe the workers any more than normal severance.

What do you want from them? A corporation exists to make money. That is all. If they cannot make money here, they have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders to close the plant. Dell is not a charity.

Furthermore, if you want Dell to stick around, you have to give them the incentives. However, they have plainly stated that they cannot afford to stay here, even with the incentives.

As to the comment that it will "bring devastation to the local economy", perhaps, but that is the City of Winston-Salem's fault for bringing Dell here in the first place and making us dependent on Dell for jobs. If Winston-Salem used the money to lower business taxes IN GENERAL, perhaps we will see more businesses coming here. But that would mean fewer photo ops for politicians to showcase how many jobs they created. Creating 1 job in each of 1,000 different businesses isn't as sexy as creating 1,000 jobs in in business.

The key is to tax less and spend less to create more jobs, not go out and rob the rest of us to pay Dell or some other large corporation to swoop in here. When you dance with the Devil (large corporations), he doesn't change, he changes you.

For somebody in High Point, NC (Mingmei) how does this directly effect you?

Do you work at Dell? Probably not!

If you work(ed) at Dell then I understand your 'rant'.

Elsewise you're just another internet flamer/poser!

Why don't you keep the jobs here in america and shut down all the call centers in India, I have returned my dell 4 times in the last year and had to sit on the phone with a foreigner for over 2 hours each time and attempt to tell them what my problem was. What is the problem here?

I'll be sitting here waiting for the race-baiters who always have some comment about Black people who are arrested and accused of crimes to make some sort of comment about the theives at Dell who took millions from them, then closed up shop. Seems to me that everytime something like this happens, the perps are white. Oh, and they steal money from every last one of you, and in quantities way more than Monte or Dashawn from the block could ever dream of.

I realize I could be sitting here waiting for a long time, but that's OK, I need a rest. Class struggle is tiring.

You are struggling with more than just your class. I believe you are the race baiter. Its not been mentioned until you showed up. So now that you have brought it up what is your point or who is your dog in this fight? You are apparently not smart enough to have worked there so it does not affect you other than you be wanting to start a discussion about race.

I work in Winston-Salem, that's how it affects me, and it affects my business there because my business property taxes, business license fees, and sales taxes go to them. It also affects me in High Point because High Point does the same bloody thing every time they go out to bid for a large corporation to come in (oh, and apparently you did not know that part of High Point is in Forsyth County, so the incentives paid by Forsyth County affect me as well even as a homeowner in High Point). It also affects me as a North Carolina taxpayer since the State gave Dell a large incentive as well. We have to stop giving money to large corporations to try to beg them to come in to "create" jobs here. They have no loyalty to this area. Finally, don't forget that as someone who lives in the Triad, everything in the Triad DOES affect me. I would not begrudge someone who lived in Tobaccoville from wanting to criticize something that High Point does since its actions will affect them as well. The question isn't who says something but what was said. If you have a problem with what I said, speak out about it. That would be perfectly acceptable. However, attacking my post simply because of WHERE I posted it from when you have ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ME OR HOW IT DOES AFFECT ME is unacceptable.

Dell did the same thing in austin and nashville. i was in the austin downsize in 2000. Same thing. They are full of it as a company. They care little about employees or the communities. sorry to see so many good workers lose their jobs.

Job closings affect everyone one in the state. Whether we lose them to another country or another state.

Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. I slaved out there for that fat billionnaire for nearly 5 months
and the people who worked there were such arrogan 2zzholes, I can't really say I am sorry they are losing their jobs. Especially the team leads and managers, those lazy pr!x. I knew that place was going down like the Titanic when I worked there, because the workers kept messing up computers all the time, had to keep re-doing the work...shoddy. My desktop is a Dell and I'll never, ever buy another one so long as I live. That's why my laptop
is a Toshiba. Dell computers are crap!

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Pisces

You should have a lucky break today when fate steps in and takes a hand. For instance, a situation may seem to be heading for disaster when you're suddenly bailed out in ways you would never have imagined. However, this doesn't mean you can take foolish risks in the hope that things will work out all right because there's no guaranteeing that they'll do so automatically.
