If state funding is based on enrollment, isn't this going to help the schools in Winnetka? Basically Meeks' plan is going to end up getting more money for Winnetka and less for the Chicago schools. What an idiot!

Oak Park has created discussion panels and held numberous meetings to figure out why the white students, on average, perform better than the black students. Some people believe the educational divide is caused by some sort of institutional racism. I just don't see how that's possible.

Sadly, the people ignored in all this are the underperforming white students. They're just stupid, I guess.

Parental involvement is the key to successful education. Don't rely on the state to provide everything.

This should be used as an educational opportunity for the parents and children of CPS who choose to skip school & head to New Trier. The school will be effectively shut down, so New Trier should provide refreshments and give tours of their campus. They should be very proud of their school and what their parents have accomplished. A prime lesson in what happens if you attend classes, pay attention & graduate from school...any school! Then go on to college...any college! This might be the best lesson the kids & parents of CPS will receive all year.

Go ahead and try!

They'll never make it to the school. Don't they know black people aren't allowed in Northbrook and Winnetka?

Although I agree that skipping the first day of school is probably not the best solution, I believe that all you Northsiders and North Suburbanites ar seriously misguided when it comes to education. Yes, education is a result of hardwork by everyone. However, how can you say that a history book missing pages from a Southside school is equal to New Trier and places like it? Schools are funded by property taxes....which means the wealthy get the best funding, and thus, education. And for the comment about all the Southsiders need to stop worrying about their ghetto and find real jobs....I'm a Southsider....I have a real job.....and I DON'T agree with the school funding. The main thing I've noticed. About these posts is that people are making comments and they have no idea what it is like in these skills...all they are doing is making outrageous stereotypes. Also, just because Reverend Meeks has gotten limelight from this issue..doesn't mean that he is all about publicity. He has been active in the community for many, many years. This issue is important...and needs to be addressed. I'm pretty sure everyone has heard the phrase, "Put yourself in someone else's shoes." Everyone should do that before they make their ignorant comments.

I don't agree with Meeks on this one.
But, Something has to be done about school funding.

We as a state rank 49th in funding per child?

We can build Billion dollar sparts stadiums. Throw money at the olympic committee and Pay for Air/Water and taste festivals. But we can't raise the amount of money we s[pend per child.

And this is for all you morons on the north shore who think you're better than the folks in the city.

Spending more per child would help your districts too.
If the state spends more, Than thoretically your local taxes would go down.

And if they don't? Then your child just receives that much more.

This is about funding equality. Not geography.
Those kids deserve to have the same amount of funding.

PERIOD.

How are the sophmores, juniors and seniors going to pre-game before the first day of school with the heightened police presence? Talk about injustices.

"With an eye toward everything from traffic to toilets, school administrators in Winnetka and Northfield said they want to plan for "every contingency" and use the occasion as a lesson for their students."

It's good to see the school district is taking the 'high road'.

I live in Chicago and pay property taxes. My neighborhood school is HORRIBLE! So, I pay for my daughter to go to a private school. I understand that not everyone can afford this option. However, the best predictor of a child's success in school is the amount of parental involvement. The amount of money I spend on tuition is significantly less than the amount spent by the government (our tax dollars) per child in the worst public schools, so it is not necessarily how much the state/government spends per child. It comes down to PARENTAL involvement. Make sure your child gets enough rest, eats a nutritious meal, does their homework, reads books, goes to school EVERYDAY, and they will be more successful.

Geez protest in New Trier dey gots da monie.

Weez duznt has to pay da taxes dey do.

Dey da problem wit dare monie cuz dey dont giz us any.
ETC.ETC.

This from the people represented by Senators Smith, Obama, Meeks.

What has been done in the name of funding?

What has been done with Operation PUSH? Did not the good reverend paly this tune 20 years ago. Did the community take him seriously and get to work? Or have they continued to vote in the problem?

Where is the real work? Nice grandstanding as a from of extortion and or guilt tripping IS NOT translatable into public policy as long as the community keeps voting the status quo.

This brings to mind the most perfect definition on insanity. Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.

The difference in monies is a function of the COMMUNITIES COMMITMENT.

Until the community changes its' behavior the results will not change.

Didn't Hillary write ( yeah she did) a book , It takes a Village to raise a child?

Meeks is a moron and is only showing these kids who are ditching school that all they have to do is whine and...

wait, nothing changes.

They're still slackers, from slacker families, who don't value education and don't know enough to realize that you have to be responsible for your own fate.

GET YOUR ASSES in school. I hope none of the teachers repeat any first-day material for those who miss class. Heck, they should give an exam worth 50% of their grades on day 1, and then see who gets blamed.

Idiots who don't want to better themselves, should not be a concern for the rest of society who is working to get ahead.

No one in the north shore is saying they're better than those in the city. If you have a problem with the funding in the city, move out of the city then! If you can't afford a Winettka or Glencoe suburb, try Wheeling or Buffalo Grove or Palatine. There are plenty of great schools in much more affordable areas. There are cleaner facilities, cleaner ballfields, safer parks and other great ammenities that the city lacks. The city is only a 30 minute train ride from many of the suburbs too.

This will be a huge national photo opt for Meeks and his supporters. But what will disrupting classes at New Trier accomplish? My question is where is Meeks coming up with the financial resources for all the buses and people he says that are going New Trier on Tuesday? And who is going to pay for all the extra police that will be needed to direct traffic and maintain order? Hold on to your wallets folks. I am afraid to say that we the taxpayers are going to be paying for this political stunt of a Chicago politician to maintain his huge ego. It is the "Chicago Way."

I moved to the New Trier school district when I had my child from Chicago for the schools, I now pay 5 TIMES more in taxes for this PRIVELEGE. If these kids want to come to New Trier for school their parents should have to move here and see what it is like to pay $10,000/year in tax (low end). Like they say, you get what you pay for. I am sure all of the kids era happy about this whole ordeal because they get another day off of school which is exactly the opposite of the point of this charade. Meeks is making a mockery out of the system and should stick to the church and stay out of the way of the schools. You don't see them telling kids not to go to church for fear of being molested. Maybe the schools need to start passing a donation basket around to see how fast the CPS parents are ready (and able) to provide the money. Maybe the church should start more fundraisers for the kids school books. And all of this nonesense about getting books that have torn and missing pages, the last I remember we PAID for books before the start of every year, they are not free and can be bought new or used online or at the school bookstore. If the CPS is giving them out for free then we go back the "you get what you pay for" deal. As far as I am concerned, if you ATTEND school and study when you get home, you should have no problem succeeding. Wouldn't the kids who actually want to succeed be better off at under performing schools? If they come to New Trier they will be competing for scholarships with other highly qualified kids as where if they went to school in the city, they will have a better shot at being at the top of their class with more grants and scholarships.

I'll bet if all of these "protesters" down on the south side were out finding jobs instead of biitching about their ghetto, then they might pay more taxes and in turn create better funding for their schools.
Out here in the suburbs we are too busy at work to be holding protests every day.
exactly why I hate suburbanites. Their sheltered outlook and experience. Their Blatant and masked racism. Their narrow minded and uneducated view of the world outside of their little lily white bubble of affluency. It's about opportunity you ignoramuses. There is a huge inequity, you have to make half a million a year to live in most places that feed into the New Trier school district. After a quality book education, where is the cultural education? Where will one be exposed to other cultures and backgrounds, ethnic and economic? Not in Winnetka, IL. I can assure you. Why can't these parents have quality schools in their own neighborhoods? Property taxes are high enough in the city, and all over cook county. How are these monies allocated? It's about access to an already well heeled and well-connected network. Which basically means, rich, white, and suburban.
If you took a second and actually left the strip malls, megaplexes, and cookie cutter housing in far flung suburbia and take heed to the conditions in which other people are forced to live. Just cause you live and probably grew up around extreme privilege and little adversity, don't make sweeping generalizations about poeple you've never seen, met, or talked to. idiiots. geez
