This little publicity act not only penalizes the children on the trip by having them miss the valuable first day of school, it also hurts the serious students who are in class on schedule because the second day will be turned into chaos when the absentees disrupt what should be second day of productive learning. If Meeks were not just a publicity hound, he would be urging parents to take their children to school every day, first to the last, and encouraging them to be on time always, requiring them to study, and FEEDING THEM instead of expecting the school to do what they should be doing.

Doesn't the amount of funding provided to Chicago schools depend upon first day attendance? What is Meeks thinking - or is he? It is tragic that these children are being used to further his political agenda, and tragic that parents are allowing this to happen. Perhaps he should consider the cost to the schools of the 125 busses to transport the children, cost to ensure that the demonstration is carried out safely, and the opportunity cost of these children missing a valuable day of education in their young lives.

Want to fix this education problem?

Raise real estate taxes in Chicago!!!!

Then when there is more money for CHICAGO schools DON'T give it school ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS but use it for the STUDENTS

Chaigoians....make sure YOUR childern go to school, study, and do their homework.

If your child isn't doing well in school MAKE them study more and focus on school

Stop looking to place the blame on others.

Period !!!!

Logical is right. We should do it like the Chinese and make sure everyone toes the party line. Rabble rousing should be strictly forbidden.

We should call in the National Guard and protect New Trier from the chaos and potential disruption. There is just no room in a democratic society for disruption and potential chaso. Order must be maintained at all costs or else the terrorists win.

Maybe they should go to Evanston High School where the spending per kid is on par with New Trier. Funny though is that the black kids, with the same funding per child as the white kids, do much worse than the white kids. I guess there is something to be said for attending classes and doing homework....

Indeed, the inequities in education are very real. As they are in every state, comparing the poor neighborhoods with the wealthy.

However, since no student can enroll in whatever school they choose, and MUST pay tuition once that enrollment is accepted -- the Chicago students are being used to prove a point. I honestly feel badly for them -- for their current educational plight as well as being pawns in a state political show-down.

I hope all goes well for everyone on Tuesday.

PS The article doesn't mention where Mr. Meeks is obtaining the money to rent the buses. Surely that isn't coming out of education funds?

Maybe New Trier can teach meeks how a responsible school is run and how that relates to the parents being involved in the lives of their children, the school, and the community. It just doesn't work because you want it to, it works because of the hard work everyone puts in.

Use the Obama solution: raise the taxes in Chicago at least 25%. Impose a 10% tax on all bribes taken by aldermen and city inspectors. Charge one dollar for evey voter who votes for a tax rasing democrat politician. Now that is real change.

I'll bet if all of these "protesters" down on the south side were out finding jobs instead of biitching about their ghetto, then they might pay more taxes and in turn create better funding for their schools.
Out here in the suburbs we are too busy at work to be holding protests every day.

New Trier is open to anyone who is willing to pay the taxes in that district. I remember an outstanding athlete a few years ago whose father moved to that district to get him a good education and national exposure in sports. He wound up with a scholarship to Stanford.

CPS parents who care this much for their children can do the same thing.

So let me get this straight....

Boycott school and education (which makes alot of sense-sarcasm inserted here) Then waste a ton a money on hiring 150+buses (which can be used for education)Ship the inner city kids to New Trier, where the resident of New Trier district pay huge amount in taxes in order to send their kids to better schools......Wow...that is the most brillant way to handle this...(sarcasm here too)So when I pay a huge amount in taxs like many of us do every year, I can expect my child and our schools to be inundated with familes that dont pay a fraction of what I pay for in taxs..Please do not give me some sob story about not having a chance for a fair education....We came from a extremely poor country and I kid you not when we shared pants between 3 brothers. I worked hard and sacraficed alot to be here today and I played by the rules.

If this is the case. I expect to pay the same amount for taxs that these inner city families are paying.

Don't they realize if they successfully enroll, the school will stop being nice? Making another school worse by putting unintelligent children with no money is one way to define equality, I guess.

The Chicago students should go to a better school like Evanston or Oak Park. The statement they are trying to make is that a mostly white school needs to be disturbed!!! The shock value would not be as great at multi-cultural school.

I live in Oak Park and the school is a good one. If you want to attend, you better live their or else it's come up with a great deal of cash. No freeloading. Not to mention they don't have metal detectors in the school because we are not having that bs that they put up with in the city with their kids. You have to pay to play and in order to play you need a job, not welfare. A brother just keeping it real.

Exactly if you want more money for school pay more taxes or send your child to a private school or tutor to help your child.

You get what you work and pay for !

What's next are they going to demand that people undress and move out of their homes to accomodate a change in fashion and housing >

Reality Check - there is no magic potion being served up at New Trier. Education to the high school level does not necessitate more money it involves more commitment on the part of parents and students to do the work in learning.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Pisces

Having to bow down to convention or limitations is enough to make you want to scream right now, and you'll do your utmost to rebel in any way you can. Be careful about this because you could easily get on the wrong side of someone who has power or authority over you. It feels as though you're battling with forces that want to keep you under control, and you don't like it one bit.
