They'd better have a whole lot more proof than just catching him at the computer and looking at the screen. That's like arresting someone simply standing near a broken window, saying he or she is the one that broke it.
What they need to do is hire a decent IT staff and train them and the rest of the faculty in IT Security. Otherwise, they'll be looking at some bigtime lawsuits if they aren't already.
You're kidding, right? If he wasn't hacking, how did he get into any records besides his own?

How enterprising. Either political party or Big Business might be happy to hire the suspect (isn't it through trickery the way most of them get ahead?). With reservations though, because the student got caught and disavowing is more difficult these days.

I'd like to give a hand to the Winnetka Police Department and New Trier (if applicable) for sharing this information, this student's name and photo, and not just sweeping this incident under the rug. It would have been so easy to keep the incident 'hush hush' or be scared by wealthy parents who could be 'lawyering up' and not print the story.

A violation of school rules calls for discipline, such as a suspension, but criminal charges are not appropriate. The criminal system is not the answer to every problem, much as so-called hardasses would like to think so. Wrecking a teens' life for this kind of behavior is worse than the bad conduct itself. I had hoped we were better than that, at least in New Trier, but I guess we are just as boneheaded as the rest of America.

Yes, but ever notice how police, when one of their own is nabbed, will often not immediately disclose the name or photo of the allegedly offending cop? Especially the CPD.

At least when Ferris Bueller hacked in he did it from home. Man, doesn't this generation watch older movies?

It's bad enough that the media confuses hacking with cracking, but now they are bestowing the term on some kid who merely stole a password. Big deal.

Oh yes, If you are not better than this, well, who in the world could be... GOOD GRIEf. You are more boneheaded. The only good thing? This kid's parents have the cash to pay off the judge and for good lawyers.

I noticed that, too. Or when they're seen on video tape beating up someone, they're not immediately charged with a crime. They're just put on paid leave or at the worst, fired.

Irrelevant in this story.

And, this information was not "immediately disclosed"; the incident happened back in February.

The kid unlawfully gained access to other peoples' personal information. It's a criminal act, violation of privacy, and a breech of trust.

He "hacked" into the network, I hate how ambiguous they make it. I don't think any real hacking took place.

You misunderstand me.

I'm not saying that what he did wasn't criminal behavior.

What I'm saying is that it likely involved no hacking/cracking (the manner is which the kid was caught demonstrates quite clearly that he has minimal skills at best), and that the Trib is sensationalizing a rather mundane story by invoking that.
