***ATTENTION FELLOW RESIDENTS OF MOUNT VERNON, TX***
If you have property (commercial or residential) within the city limits of Mount Vernon, TX you need to get a copy of the proposed Tree Preservation Ordinance that is slated to be voted on December 8th and read through it. I encourage you to talk to your City Council Members about voting AGAINST this ordinance!!!

I have only lived in Mt Vernon for 3 years but in that time I have came to love the town. Here lately I have been angered many times about ordinances that the City Council has approved to better this town. In my opinion they have done nothing good but yet hurt the middle class people that cant afford to have everything perfect in their yard or home. The thing that angers me most is that they try and do it as fast as possible and as quiet as possible so that the people that vote them in dont have a chance to speak their mind. I hope that the word gets around about the Tree Preservation Ordinance so that all can be present and take back the rights we have as property owners. We are the ones that pay our taxes on these properties so let us decide what we want to do to our properties.

There will be a public workshop at city hall on Tues. Nov.24 concerning the tree ordinance. Please be present, for or against. This is not about the trees but about our rights as private property owners.

Not from Mt. Vernon ( thus my presence on the "Mt.Pleasant" forum ) but I don't really see a problem with locals protecting large trees from hungry developers in their area. My families (both sides) owned a large amount of acreage in Titus and Franklin counties when the strip miners moved in and decimated hundreds of acres of old hardwood forests. What I wouldn't give to be able to walk among those 200 - 300 year old oaks again.

I'm sorry all the "mall-builders" will have to reconsider their options but I guess they'll just have to get over it. I don't know a single person (who has respect for their land) that is willing to cut down a 100 + year old tree to make room for "progress".

The commerical/industrial aspect of the Tree Preservation Ordinance is a good thing...it's where private residents are subject to fees/fines of up to $1200 per tree depending on the tree if it dies or if they want it removed for whatever reason that is the problem. Also this ordinance is for the City Limits of Mt Vernon...it will not apply to property in the county...

Hopefully all the input will have an affedt on revisions to the ordinance. Im not against tree preservation but I dont like being told what I can do with my residential property and the person that commented about about the strip mining I haave to say they have made large investments to try and return the land to as close to natural as it was but yes I know it will be after our time until that happens. But I dont here anyone complaining about cheaper energy costs and all the jobs those mines created.
