My wife and I left the house yesterday morning, and where our road ends at the main road there was a crew of 5 hispanics getting out of a PEC Forestry Division truck. Why, when there are men here in the county (Scott) who need to be working, even if the job is short term. I told my wife they were going to either spray or clean the right of way under the lines. Please help our county by calling Plateau Electric Monday and inquiring why this hispanic work crew are taking jobs away from Scott Countians. Remember that Plateau Ele. is a cooperative, this means we are part owners.

They aren't working for Plateau. Plateau contracted out the work and the contractors hired them. Even if it was Plateau doing it, people from Scott County wouldn't be doing the work anyway. People aren't going to be outside with the sprayer on their back doing real work. People here are too lazy. They just want to lie around and keep getting their unemployment and welfare checks.

If these men had been white I'd sure been more confident that they were hired from within the Plateau Cooperative area. Do you have hispanics in your family tree, are you even from Scott or a surrounding county? I guarantee if these jobs had been put in the local papers reguardless of the length of time the job would last local people would rush to put in for them. Race is not the issue, but since their skin color didn't match 99.99999% of other people in the county it sure sent up a red flag.

Football Fan hasn't gone anywhere. There was no need for me to respond because Anonymous nailed it. It's funny that you folks get so riled up about something that is so frigging obvious. PEC did not hire these people. This is a contractor and PEC has no say so in who they hire.

I'm afraid Anonymous is also correct that most Scott County people wouldn't have taken the jobs. I mean seriously, you got McDonalds begging for people to go to work in their management program. MANAGEMENT, for crying out loud. If folks aren't going to go flip hamburgers or answer the telephone as AT&T for minimum wage, they sure as hell aren't going to strap a tank on their back and work in the hot sun for minimum wage.

The problem with people in scott county is that they only want to work when it's convenient for them. I work for a company that has gone through about 15 employees since january. I'd say another 20 have been turned down because they cannot pass a drug screen. Everybody wants a job but nobody wants to work. They show up late, call in, or sit on their butts and expect to get paid for it.

I've lived in scott county for the past 15 years. Jobs are there for people who want them. You can't get a job without trying though, and I don't see very much of that. Everyone has a feeling of entitlement that they deserve a certain job or a certain wage, and that's just not life.

If these men are here legally there's nothing wrong with them working that job. I'm sure they get a hell of a lot more done than anyone else that would be working. They're all trying to provide for their families and I don't care what their skin color is, they have just as much right to it as anyone else.

You and anonymous are in the same boat (with only one oar). The truck they were getting out of was a PEC TRUCK.

Do you understand what being contracted out means?
Highland contracts individuals and they still drive Highland trucks.
Same for Comcast.
Could it be possible that the same thing goes for PEC? surely not..

Contracted out? Do you understand what that means? Not only contracted out of the county, but out of the COUNTRY! PEC used to have a line crew that did all the work from here in Scott Co. they'd help the other counties crews if they needed more help than they had in their county. These jobs should be filled from here in this county. It's so simple especially with our unemployment rate.

That isn't a PEC truck. It has a PEC sticker on the side of it so folks don't get suspicious seeing it parked on their land and call the cops. That's something every utility company in the country does. Look closer next time and you'll also see the name of the company on the truck. And look at the license plates. PEC's trucks are required to be licensed in TN. The truck you saw wasn't.

Listen, your not hearing the distinction of each word. This is work that could have been done from here in THIS COUNTY, and no there was NO OTHER markings on the truck. How easy could it be to obtain the PEC magnetic plackard an put them on the doors of the vehicle to scope out a neighborhood, you brought up that point, and I didn't catch the plates I was looking at the individuals and then the doors. Plateau is a Cooperative, which means "WHO" owns it? That's right, it's MEMBERS, and now WHO are its MEMBERS?

Well sure it could have been done here in THIS COUNTY. Assuming we have people who would've taken the jobs, and I do have my doubts about this.

However, the point you aren't getting is that it's up to the contractor to hire people from this county. NOT PEC. When it comes to tree-trimming, PEC can contract with a local company that hires local workers. But there's no one in Scott County certified to do the spraying, so PEC had to hire a contractor from KY. And of course that company is going to bring their own employees with them.

In any event, these are temporary jobs that only lasted the summer. People who are working already aren't going to quit their jobs to take a temporary job that only lasts a few weeks, and people who are unemployed aren't going to give up their benefits to take a temporary job, especially one that pays minimum wage.

It's NOT PEC who has contracted all this work out (to my knowledge), it is TVA!! They are doing it over 12,000 miles in TN, KY, ALA, MISS, ETC. True, we need those jobs if people are willing to work them, so...GO PUT IN AN APP. AT TVA IN KNOXVILLE...if you are interested/and get their list of contractors, too!

Blalock Construction also was just awarded a contract by TVA to build a big new bridge over Fort Loudon Dam (starts in August), so apply there if interested in WORKING the next 4 yrs.!

YOU have to go apply/sign up/FIND the jobs...they do NOT come to you while you have the remote in your hands at home. Also, there is a JOB FAIR at the TTC in Oneida THIS THURSDAY from 10am-3pm. They need welders, forklift ops, general laborers, ship/rec clerks/clerical, etc.

Daily Horoscope for June 19

Capricorn

You're feeling slightly unconventional and you're looking for activities that will reflect your mood. You certainly won't be very keen on doing things that are drearily predictable or boring, although you'll grit your teeth and get on with them if you have no choice. But ideally you should do things on the spur of the moment, preferably in the company of people who make you feel alive and alert.
