A Texas couple is sueing for slander and libel for messages about them that were posted on TOPIX. And the judge is letting the suit go forward. Right now the couple is in the process of getting names of the people who posted the lies.

I agree that this forum has become a medium for people who sit at their keyboards and bash others not caring about reputations being destroyed. It needs to be monitored more closely or shut down.

I'd rather see it shut down... because they probably wouldn't do a good job on monitoring it!

In reading through these posts, most of what I've seen isn't libel or slander, as it is true and common knowledge (drug dealing, ods, etc). In a way the people who are talked about on here bring it on themselves; however, I definitely agree that it could be used to start an untrue (libelous) rumor.
okay

Not starting anything just asking..But just because they bring it on themselves, does that give someone the right to bring it up on the Internet...just so others can add how bad of a person they are, and talk about the way the live their life? however people choose to live their life should be left up to them..
I read one telling a 13 year old girl she was a "hoe" and telling her to go cut her wrist.. I agree it's gone to far!

Probably shouldn't be brought up, no, but if you care about your reputation it's probably a good idea to do the things that get talked about. Otherwise, if you're a pillhead and sleeping with everyone and talking loudly about being in gangs and how high you get every day, you're probably going to get talked about...online and everywhere else. It's really not about rights. They have the right to do it, and the public has the right of speech. Calling a 13 year old a ho? Bad to say it, but not necessarily untrue.
okay

very true.. i do agree with you for the most part.. but telling a 13 year old to cut her wrist.. i don't agree with, alot of kids these days do cut themselves over the things people say about them..

When these young people realize that what they're so proud of is illegal, immoral, unethical, and mostly the result of parents who shouldn't have ever had a pet, much less a child, then maybe it will stop being talked about. I've never seen a community where the kids take such pride in their capacity to drink, do drugs, drop out of school, get pregnant, fight, and get arrested. So it's hard to feel sorry for them when they get talked about for it. Wrist cutting is not called for.

Calling a 13 year girl a ho and telling her to cut her wrists is definately going way to far. Usaully at that age it is just people being immature. The poor girl probably did nothing wrong and someone is probably jealous of her or something she has. Even if she did do something wrong that's still going too far. In this town if you have sex once your considered a ho, slut or whore. People are way to quick to judge around here. No one is perfect and we shouldn't judge them .

This site has gone to far. This site should be used for news and important things. But people just choose to abuse that. It sure is easy to talk sh*t over the internet. I think if you have something to say you should just say to someones face, not sit behind your computer and use annoyomous names.

You can't start an intelligent conversation on here, one was started over welfare being drug tested, go look at it and see when it turned to name calling and crap....there's always going to be a drama queen or an ass in every crowd.

the 13 yeAR old girl who was called a hoe...well i used to be friends with her and her mother never takes any control over her. i do agree with you a parent should be teaching their child values. and they should also teach their children to know when theyre doing wrong

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation in public. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes used to denote not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are closely related to, yet distinct from, the concept of freedom of thought. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech".

The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The ICCPR recognizes the right to freedom of speech as "the right to hold opinions without interference. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression".[1][2] Furthermore freedom of speech is recognized in European, inter-American and African regional human rights law.

International, national and regional standards recognise that freedom of speech, as one form of freedom of expression, applies to any medium, including the Internet.

A gripe site is a type of website devoted to the critique and or mockery of a person, place, politician, corporation or institution, etc . They are also known as "complaint" or "sucks" sites.

In an attempt to shut down a gripe site, companies have sued the gripe site owner alleging defamation, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, libel and copyright infringement. Public Citizen, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have defended gripe site owners in court on the grounds that free speech gripe sites are protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Don't like it? Don't go on Topix. Simple.

Just wait until you and your family have been talked about on here, you will see how it hurts. The things that were said about us were untrue. If people in this town would mind their own business and quit talking about others, it would be a better place to live.
