Actually Gayle Croyle was fired by the state board of accounts for missing money in the Mayor's office. Also the Mayor's office does take in money. How do you think the Beeson clubhouse and other park facilities and shelter houses are rented out? Through the Mayor's office! Gayle is a great person but facts are facts. You can all choose to believe what you want. Just like everything that happens in city business it is all public record so feel free to look into it. Otherwise I am sure it will be in the paper or something since it obviously isn't true unless its in the paper. LOL

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen LOL. I'm not a "blowhard" and to be honest that doesn't even make sense. I think it sucks that Croyle wasn't beaten by Albrecht because Croyle has allowed the Captain and the Police Chief and the park director to basically steal money from the city so of course yes I voted against him. Whether or not you chose to believe it or not I could care less but don't insult me or my intelligence or my character because you disagree with what I'm saying. I'm not in any way attacking his wife. I know Gayle personally by name, see her all the time and what I posted was not an attack. You may want to go back and reread what I posted because I didn't say anything about her personally or anything about her at all. All I said is why she was let go. You believe what you want but the issue is being investigated by THE STATE, it's not local, not county, not city, THE STATE. The point of topix is to be able to talk about things anonymously. Just because I do or do not post my name doesn't make it factual. I have no problem sharing but its childish people like you who get mad or personally offended by what people say and you attack them. Also I'm definitely not a loser. I pay my bills, I don't' get any government assistance, I take care of my family, and I have a career that requires an education. Also just to add anytime a donation is made to the city it is taken in in the Mayor's office. And the Mayor doesn't do the hiring and firing. That is done by each individual department head (fire chief, police chief, street department superintendent) Those positions are appointed by the Mayor as well as the park board and board of works who is the disciplinary team of the city employees.

I for one have known Gail for 45 years - she is a thief - was in high school why should she change now. And one that loved to tear up families - her's and Steve's. Why should anything be different with her now? And yes she was fired!!!

Gale is the sweetest person I know and she cares about people, she wouldn't steal from anyone. She has always been there for anyone who needs her help. If there is money missing then they need to look somewhere else for it.
She is doing a great job! and I hope she stays right where she is and knows that most people in this town are behind her 100%.

Audit hits close to home for Winchester mayor

No elected official wants to receive a State Board of Accounts audit alleging mishandling of public funds.

For Winchester Mayor Steve Croyle, though, a recent SBA report on his city’s parks department — and more specifically, the handling of revenue generated by rental of the Beeson Building and Shelter — had to be especially jarring.

That’s because the report indicated $1,665 in such revenue collected between January 2011 and last June 12 was never submitted to the clerk-treasurer’s office.

The audit noted the money from the shelter and building rental is collected by the mayor’s office, more specifically by the mayor’s secretary.

In this case, the mayor’s secretary was also the mayor’s wife, Gail.

The audit reflects state auditors discussed the situation with Gail Croyle on June 20. She left the city payroll the following day, according to city records.

She also “repaid the city for the missing funds,” according to the audit.

On Wednesday, Mayor Croyle said he remained uncertain how the situation described in the audit unfolded.

“We’re not sure, exactly,” he said.“The office is very porous, and security isn’t the greatest.”

The state auditors noted money collected in the mayor’s office was being submitted to the clerk-treasurer’s office “no more than three times per month,” not “daily as (it) should have been.”

“Money on hand was not kept in a secure location,” the audit said.

Croyle said his wife’s departure from her city job was “somewhat” related to the situation, but indicated staff reductions had been anticipated due to budget constraints.

“In all good fairness, it was a rough environment,” he added.

The auditors reported their findings had been forwarded to the state attorney general’s office, and to Randolph County Prosecutor David Daly.

Asked whether he thought prosecution would be pursued, Croyle said,“That’s not for me to say.”

“The issue was addressed after it was brought to our attention,” the mayor added.

Prosecutor Daly — who attends the same church as the Croyles — told The Walker/Roysdon Report he had asked that an out-of-county prosecutor be appointed to evaluate the SBA report. In doing so, he’s in no way indicating whether or not he believes charges are warranted, he said.

“I will let the special prosecutor decide where to take it,” Daly said.
