Can anyone tell me anything about Wilson?
We might be moving there soon. Tell me a good neighborhood, but not too expensive, older would be OK. How about the public schools? Which ones are the best? I have children in all, elementary, middle and high. Some are gifted, is there a program available? How's the shopping? Grocery stores, closet mall? any help would be appreciated, my family is very nervous. |

to moving soon, the best and unbiased place to start your info search would be with the city of wilson chamber of commerce for an info pak.the pak will include pertinent info and coupons to use should you relocate to wilson. the city of wilson is very small they claim to be populated by fifty thousand. main hyways are 95 and 301. it is what one would consider a small bedroom town.wilson has only 1 hospital and if you need indepth medical care you will have to go elsewhere like raleigh, durham, chapel hill or greenville.so that one factor is something to take into serious consideration for the sake of your children's health care. the main and large employers are the hospital, smithfield packing, and the nursing homes, also bridgestone.there are many churches!!!!!!!!!! a lot of residents drive into raleigh for the good jobs. they also go to raleigh for entertainment, shopping and much much more.there is an amtrak station/agreyhound station.the downtown area is seriously striving and has a lot of closed buildings not much of a downtown.the mall is losing a lot of stores as well almost empty. penney's and sears are the large retailers in the mall at the present time. for more info just check their newspaper it is called the wilson daily times. it is a small city with its woes as any other city in today's time. you can also glean much info from the city website. i would advise anyone to check all resources about any decision to make any major moves especially when children are involved. there are christian schools in wilson as well as public schools, there is also a community college and a 4 year college as well. and of course it goes without saying there is very good barbecue and hush puppies!!!!!!!!!!we southerners are so very very very hosipitable. by the way the yard sales are great also.just remember check with the chamber of commerce and newspaper and website (city). all the best to you and family in your choice.
God bless you and be with you in this decision. |

Hi, I suppose it would take way too long to tell you about Wilson, the highs and the lows. To be sure, there are good qualities, but I won't try to fool you by saying this is a perfect town...no city qualifies for that anyway. One good thing about the city is that it is centermarked in eastern NC, meaning to your north is Rocky Mount, and the VA border, to your west is Raleigh and MUCH better shopping, to your east is Greenville and to the south is Goldsboro. Wilson sits smack dab between it all.
A negative is that the growth of Wilson has alienated a lot of people, and I'll be honest, this town has not solved the race issue, no matter what they say. It is incredibly hard for an African American business person to get the same look as anyone else, and the city has seemed dead set to build away from "troubled neighborhoods". There is little to no support for small businesses, and they cater more to big businesses like Wal Mart and such, or to "old school" tobacco money. They schools are as good as most around, neither great nor bad, but it is easy to tell where some color lines are drawn, even with schools. Anyway, that is a start, Wilson is a nice place to live, but they are as aveage as any other town. Lots of problems, but there are good people around. |

I would not recommend the move. You didn't mention your age. If you are a young person not much in wilson. There a alot of churches. You would need to live in West Wilson for your children to go to the favored schools. Utilities are so high - real problem in wilson. do your research? You didn't mention if you were transfering into a job? If not, job market is slim like all places. City is very racially bias. If that does not include you, then maybe you will fit into the "good ole boy network". There is a big one here.

The town is a halfway point between Miami and NY on the major interstate I-95. That being said, dope is pumped into this area by local authorities who pass it around to lawyers and BBQ tycoons until it dwindles down into the hands of the everyday common drug peddlers who end up doing the time for it. Getting around or becoming anything here is all in who you know. As for educating the kids, do the private schools and keep them away from the adolescent public. The public schooling system's curriculum has to be dumbed down to pass the thousands of thugs, hoodlums, and riff raffers onto the next class and get them out of there. I grew up here and I know.
