our new president wants to spend alot of money on infrastructure upgrades to put people to work and jump start the economey. i wish they would consider a program to bury utilility lines. i know it would not be the end of power outages but at least we wouldn't have to worry about ice, trees and auto accidents. this could be a program like the one that brought electricity to rural america in the '30's. with new technology available today, going across roads,driveways etc.. can be done with less of an impact. another added benefit is that it beautify the countryside.

What a wonderful idea. I buried mine a few years ago. Last spring we had a very bad storm and a big locust limb fell on the cable line that had not been buried. The power lines were on the same pole. Saved me a big headache. I wonder how to get that idea through to the powers that be? |

That should read the power lines "had been" on the same pole.

Who pays for the electricity when the power is off?
Does anyone out there really believe the power company will take the hit? Don't laugh. The cable companys tried this approach and failed, years ago. It sounds turrible because it is turrible! |
||||
I believe that if the power is off then the meter does not run...therefore no charge. I imagine there are some kind of fees or taxes that don't get reduced though. |
||||
UR correct. There is no abatement of the basic service charges even though the service is not available. The underground service from the primaries to buildings is a good idea for exactly the reasons you spoke of. The direct burial cable is more expensive than the stuff hanging in the air but it's worth it if you live around trees. The outages emphasize the wisdom of alternate off-grid power supplies, stored food and water, and alternate heat sources. |

WOW... And maybe it would be alright if we were living back in the 1800's!! BUT.. we're not - are we? I just went for 6 days without heat and water with no spare money to be spending on excess expenditures. It wasn't fun. It was a lot of work and it cost me a lot of money. Smarten up!
