I Love Newtonsville and always will. I lived there when I was a kid in the 60's. I always wanted to go back there and live again because I was so happy there. I dont guess Charlie Chapmans store could still be there on the corner? The last time I managed a drive through many years ago it was still there. But my beloved school had been torn down.
Back then when the snow covered the ground most of the children at the elementary had great fun because at recess just about all kids in the whole school would slide down the hill until there were several srips of solid ice that reached from the top of the hill to the bottom. We all slid on our behinds over and over again down that hill!
In the 60's Newtonsville was a model town for children to grow up in. I think the Mayors name was Mr Lykins. Principle of our school was Mr Anstead. There was another prinsiple but I dont remember his name.
Just wanted to say what a nice place the town was to call home.

Guess you also remember when the Fire Dept.every year held a festival in the field by the fire station, and every fire dept in thencounty would sent their trucks for the prade that went all the way around town, it was great.Remember when Werner', s had the hardware store up town and JD Werner was Mayor and Tom Shreve was Police Chief. Biggest problem then was kids out past curfew

Sure I remember the parade and the festival. The booths were set up in Grundys field. The dunking booth and horse race was the highlight for me. My sisters and I were participants most every year. I have many memories of Newtonsville. When I was around 8 years old I spent my saved allowance at Warner's hardware to surprise my mother with a little gift, she still has it. As I moved through the grades Sherry Shreve was in my class many years. I thought it was really neat to have a classmate in my class who's father was a policeman. For my family it was a wonderful place.

I love it too, as bad as it has gotten over the years. I just hope we can get some more fresh faces on the village council and they can straighten things out and start making it a better place!

Do you remember who started the fire department or who would have been some of the earlier members? We have been trying to pull together our history with stories and pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

The Fire Dept.if I remember wass started in the early 60s or late 50s. The first fire truck was an old root beer delivery truck that a group of guys made in a fire truck. Imn the early days there was Don Lykins, Tom Shreve, Mr. Muse, the Werner boys, Clyde Walker and his brother and a few others that I am trying to remember. The first ambulance was an old Packard given to them by a Furneal Home, then they went to a 57 Ford station wagon. Finally getting a new ambulance in 1965. About a year before they got there first new fire engine.6002

I remember some Martins. Look in the album at the children sitting in a classroom. Seems to me the little boy standing up in the row by the black board is a Martin and he is wearing a white shirt with long sleeves and a bow tie. Is he a relative of yours? I think he lived in a big white house on the right side of the road out side of town seems like there was a long drive way.

No Sandy Thats not me. In 1962 I was in the 6th or 7th grade.I was in the same class as your sister Brenda,I think. Our house was outside of town on state route 133 on the right going toward Edenton. Did your family move out of Newtonsville in the early to mid 60's? I don't remember seeing Brenda after grade 6 or 7.

Daily Horoscope for January 1

Cancer

Happy New Year, Cancer! Are you ready to put those resolutions into place? Not quite?! Crustaceans are never quite sure just how much they can get away with and where to draw the line. You have a flair for the dramatic and when you're the narrator, your exploits become deeds that would make a knight proud. Your fans know you're a hero, whatever history might prove. Audacity impresses most people but if you go to far you could cause offence.
