WCTU quietly continues its fight against alcohol

Full story: The Indianapolis Star

Eighteen-year-old Ashley Buchanan says she'll never touch a drop of alcohol. That might make her a minority among college students, but this week she's with about 350 other women who think just like her.

I totally agree that getting drunk and driving is wrong, or getting so drunk you make a fool out of yourself. But I honestly don't see anything wrong with going out and having a beer or two with friends every once in a while. Swearing off ALL alcohol is a little extreme. I didnt even know the WCTU still existed. My great great grandmother was in it way back in the late 1800's/early 1900's.

ALL HAIL The 21st Amendment!!!!

You tried once and what was the effect? Americans STILL drank and you helped fuel the growth of Al Capone and the Chicago mob, and the fortunes of one Joe Kennedy.

I don't need anyone, gov't or a bunch of ol' bitties, telling what I can or cannot do in the comfort of my own home or within the limits of the law.

I don't believe that they are trying to tell you what you can or can't do, but rather what you should or shouldn't do. They are saying that people shouldn't drink, and, frankly, I would be inclined to agree with them. Alcohol has ruined a lot of families and a lot of lives.

That's probably true, but people who are older tend to have a little better perspective on this issue than those who are younger. When you are 18 or 20, it is difficult to fully grasp the impact that alcoholism can have on relationships and lives. But as you get older, and you see the effect that alcohol has on the people around you, the perspective comes a bit easier.

i have to disagree. people make their own decisions. nobody forced said person to drink. saying alcohol ruined a life is like saying a gun killed someone.

Alcohol and religion have one thing in commom; both are good so long as they are taken in MODERATION.

Besides, the first public miracle written about in the bible that was done by Jesus was turning water into wine. Cheers!

The WCTU is one of the models that modern liberal groups use. Their (WCTU) push for prohibition in the early 1900's, using fraudulent statistics and political bribery is a mainstay for current liberal groups seeking to ban everything from SUV's to public smoking. Just as the rates of alcoholism were inflated in the early 1900's, the modern liberal uses fraudulent stats in regards to second hand smoking deaths, manmade CO2 contributions to "global warming"..etc.. Just as Al Gore doesn't seem to think it hypocritical to travel using private jets, limousines, etc...Carrie Nation didn't think it hypocritical that she consumed about a pint of Jed Clayton Rye whiskey a day.

I'm not saying that anyone was forced to drink at all. I'm saying that the group is advocating for people not to drink because alcohol ruins lives.

I agree that it is a person's choice to drink, but that doesn't alter the fact that it is a bad choice.
