Two downtown York night clubs close

keep dreaming johnny boy. go back to stroking your new boy kevin... seems he knows as much about the reality of your crap city as you do. or maybe you are aware of the reality and that is why you are leaving. just stick to packing your bags and get the hell out. by the way, take your new cheerleader with you.

Go way back to when The Golden Bear, then Zakie's, then Cobblestones were going to save and re-vitalize the downtown. Same story, different year.

They didn't have the right management in the York Clubs...
What you are saying doesn't make sense cause the White Rose which is in York is packed every night.
They just know what crowd to cater too...

York is the city of failure. What does the consultant the mayor hired have to say? This is just the begining of many closings. York is not middle class anymore Its a ghetto slum being run by the thugs who have taken over a once nice city.

I just moved 20 miles outside of York and people really do have a horrible outlook on York City. Most people I meet would rather cut their own arm off then go into York. It has gotten alot worse in the last 10 years. All the trash from the bigger cities have moved in and set up shop....it's turning into one big project.

Look at the bright side: There will be less peeing on city streets.

Safety at night is the major deterrent for a vibrant nightlife.

Can I ask a question? How many of you cantankerous windbags actually spend any time at night, downtown, between george and newberry?

How many of you actually eat at any of the restaurants mentioned or go to any of the bars mentioned? And when and where PRECISELY on these streets, the "heart" of the city, do you feel unsafe? I'd like to know because i've never, not once, have felt unsafe in these areas.

Please, enlighten me.

Maybe Harrisburg Mayor Steven Reed should come to York? I heard he may be available?? Just a thought!

Those clubs closed because the city did nothing to help them stay open. Certain city administratiors didn't want those clubs in York so they did everything they could to make it difficult for them to stay open.

I wouldn't come into downtown York after dark if you paid me anymore, not with the almost daily shooting/stabbing. Stop the crime, run the absentee landlords out of town, get a less 'ghetto' look and class of citizenry down there and you'll get a nightlife. The only reason Harrisburg has a thriving nightlife is because the police are always around while the clubs are open.

Glad those "trash bars" are going away! People stopped even walking that way so they didn't have to deal with the immaturity and urban thuggish clientele they attracted. Hopefully the next people to open something up along that strip of Market Street will look at the clientele the White Rose and Bistro 19 bring in. That's what the city needs! Clientele that won't scream vulgarities to you as you walk by, or break out into fights over a girl, or know how to handle their liquor! There is truly an opportunity to make that area a fun area exspecially with the Harp and Fiddle set to re-open. As an outsider and a resident (young professional) of the city for the last 2 years, I'm excited about the recent changes and with a "sigh" elated that those bars are shutting down!

So, again, lds, you haven't been in the heart of the city for...how long?

Any friday or saturday night there are multiple foot cops patrolling most areas. Go downtown. then report back as to how safe or unsafe you feel.

York is like a dead man walking. You just know what the outcome is going to be in the end. All of these so called "leaders" think they have the right ideas for York. But everytime these people come to power or are handed positions in the city gov't, they all fail. York is a dead city and will never become like Lancaster or Harrisburg. With all of the closed minded people and no one thinking outside the box, it ends up being the same old thing. Good luck with your pipe dreams York.

York should offer free one way bus tickets to LA. Then some of the problem would go away.

Well, Lancaster and Harrisburg actually have larger crime problems than York. We just have "better" (yeah, right) news coverage of our crimes. You know, if you promote the bad, it will become the norm. How about this: look at page D6 of today's Dispatch - over in the corner near the fold, "Dillsburg Park Vandalized" "In the past few weeks, Carroll Township Police have taken several complaints of mischief, including damage to the gazebo, benches and several American flags."

If this was in Penn Park, or at Farquar, it would be front page news. "AMERICAN FLAGS DAMAGED AT PENN PARK".

Anyone know the crime rate in Lancaster? How about this: "The City of Lancaster used to be number two as the safest community in Pennsylvania and now we are number two in the worst cities in Pennsylvania, and the only difference is Mayor Gray and the suppression of police in taking active roles in the removal of illegal guns from people who illegally have them," Smithgall said.

He referred to the 2008 Pennsylvania State Police Crime report released in July. That report showed Lancaster having a per capita crime rate higher than Philadelphia.

Yeah, lets HOPE that York never becomes a Lancaster like someone here suggests.

Harrisburg, York and Lancaster ranked as the top three cities in the state in 2008 for crime per capita, according to Pennsylvania State Police Uniform Crime Reporting System figures released this week.
With 72.7 crimes per 1,000 people, Harrisburg ranked first, followed by Lancaster at 66.6 per 1,000 people, and York at 65.6 per 1,000 people, according to the report. By comparison, Philadelphia had a rate of 57.8 per 1,000 people and Pittsburgh had a rate of 51.9 per 1,000 people, according to the report.

In Harrisburg, violent crimes -- homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault -- increased 11.6 percent from 2007, while offenses like vandalism, fraud and drug offenses increased 0.1 percent, according to the report.

Crime also increased in the Harrisburg suburbs in 2008, with violent crime going up 5.4 percent and lesser offenses increasing 1.4 percent. Statewide, the overall number of crimes reported to the state police UCR increased less than half a percent in 2008 while violent crimes decreased by one percent. What do you have in downtown York that can now be found out in the county except expensive parking meters? If you know what I know, you will avoid the parking meters at all cost, day or night life. And, if you ever get towed,,,,may God have mercy on your wallet and/or pocket book.
