I would like to bring to everyone's attention that Cairo does still have some good folks. Ronnie McClendon and "G" (sorry, don't know his real name) have been tirelessly working to mow and clean up the park. Kudos fellas!

I, too, have noticed G and Ronnie mowing the park. Yesterday they even weed eated after mowing. Thanks guys. at least you do care about the park. While we are on that subject, we need to do something about the traffic in the park. Its not just a car or two, its traffic! There should be a four-way stop at 28th and Holbrook. You can't believe the number of cars that not only blow the stop sign at that location, but when they come out of the park, the don't even stop. These are citizens as well as law enforecement officers. That park belongs to the children who want to play, not fat ass people who are too lazy to park their car on the street and walk in to the park. I have lived around this park for most of my life and I have NEVER SEEN IT SOOO TRASHED IN MY LIFE. No picnic tables, no trash cans... its a joke. OH well, nothing changes if nothing changes.

No they are not city employees. If they were they would be sitting down at the city garage on their A$$.

Actually, it would cost us less if they would just stay at the garage or, even better, just stay home. As it is, they are normally just driving around using gas and stopping on occasion to chit-chat with friends and relatives they pass!

Well, the city didn't lay off any trash employees because they were needed and going to be used to keep the city clean, mowed, etc. I cannot be the only one who has noticed the city looks worse today than it did when we started paying $ 4 more a month for trash service and the trash employees were transferred to Cairo beautification services. Again, the barrels are gone and the park looks worse than ever. I do not walk through the park but do walk around it and, without the barrels, I am not picking up trash and the streets certainly are trashy. Drove along the river the other night and I think there is one (1) street light that works between 7th and 8th. These are little things but they make a difference. And, the brush is staying on the streets longer. My sweetie said yesterday we should take a picture of the pile across the street, put it on the internet and start counting the days until it gets picked up. She has a weird sense of humor and said, "Heck, we don't need a jar of jelly beans for a contest. People can just submit a guess of how many days it is going to take to get that pile picked up."

You'd be surprised at how well a site like this would get traffic... Something simple and funny (Sad, but funny) Maybe it would draw attention to the matter (the right kind of attention). It wouldn't cost you hardly anything at all to do.

It's ideas like this that you might think are "silly" that actually turn out to be something worthwhile.

Does anyone know what's happened to 2 of the flags that used to be in the park? The Federal Flag that's left is in shreds.

I saw in the Citizen that Mayor Childs had thanked Ron McClendon, Bill Stokes and Roger Travis for all their volunteer work. I'm glad to see these men getting recognition and thrilled that they are doing so much to beautify the city. Wouldn't it be wonderful if more people were equally conscientious.

It does, however, make me wonder what has happened to the leadership of the city maintenance workers since Bill Greer is no longer there. Perhaps the city needs to look into whomever they have hired to that position. Without a good supervisor, employees often take advantage of those who pay their salaries. With someone in authority who knows what needs to be done and who has the power to hire and fire, I imagine the city would be in good shape in little time.

Was he after Greer? We left in 1992 and it looks good on some of our trips home and not so good on others. But, heck, 1982, the weeds in the median on Washington Avenue were up to my knees. Guess you could say it has "mood" swings. LOL

If "G" is who I think he might be, he could teach us all a thing or two about lawn care and gardening.

The street department used to have 14 employees. When the new mayor and city council took over, most of those employees were terminated. The new supervisor spends to much time on personnel business to make sure the city looks decent.

I hate to hear that. Cairo is such a lovely town in spite of vacant buildings and uncared for properties that one would think keeping it looking its best would be a priority for everyone....the citizens and the city employees.

As I mentioned on another thread on this forum, I have recently been having an opportunity to visit a number of small towns in both Mississippi and Louisiana. It is always obvious when the care of the town is left to untrained personnel. Those towns that are striving to get ahead are making a point of getting resident cooperation, drawing up a plan and everyone concerned working toward a common goal. Those that don't seem to be withering on the vine. Some are decidedly dead. I know that everyone in Cairo wants whatever will prove the area to once again be a hub of activity and growth, and I know that, with faith, loyalty and hard work, it will be.

You'll can get off of kathy, she can't be responsible for all the kids that are constantly in the park causing trouble. What you'll need to be doing is asking "where are the parents?".

I've yet to see Kathy do anything in the park. Ponting was at the parks everyday checking & cleaning. I guess it’s how Carolyn was brought up. She took her title of being over the parks seriously. Sadly we get what we vote for. Maybe before her term is up Kathy will step up & do some work.

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Scorpio

If something is bothering you, it's important that you say so now, loudly and clearly. It's no good bottling things up any longer because that will only lead to resentment and a slow-burning anger. However, it's important that you know when to shut up too, otherwise you might overstate your case or sound so demanding that you turn others against you.
