It does not matter if you're walking or riding your bike, if you're in the cross walk you have the right of way.
Pedestrians don't wear lights, if she had been walking her bike, or just walking she STILL would have been hit by this inattentive bus driver.

Sorry, but you and Gina are both wrong and you seem to have a real chip on your shuolder against police. Hopefully you'll never need them to respond to an emergency call youi make because if/when that happens, you'll feel like a real fool. Getting back to the biking rules, bike riders must adhere to the same rules as a car or mortercycle. That being the case, this tragic event is the fault of the biker. The reason she was hit was that the bus driver did not see her until it was too late because she rode through the cross walk instead of walking. Had she been walking she wuold not have appeared ni the path of the bus so quickly. i leave you with this question: can you drive a car from one corner to another inside the cross walk? Of cuorse not. Guess what, same goes for a bike. Get your facts straight.

Section 275 of the California Vehicle Code states that a crosswalk is an extension of the sidewalk across the intersection. There is no law requiring cyclists to walk their bikes across the crosswalk, if it is legal to ride on the sidewalk. Which, in the area in question, it is.

Cindy Knapp is incorrect. Riding a bicycle in a crosswalk is expressly permitted by the California Vehicle Code. This right was recently clarified by SB374 which amended CVC 21650(g):

"This section does not prohibit the operation of bicycles on any shoulder of a highway, on any sidewalk, on any bicycle path within a highway, or along any crosswalk or bicycle path crossing..."

California law is plain and clear in permitting the operation of bicycles in a crosswalk.

This is the second time in recent memory that the Whittier Daily New has reported incorrect information about riding bicycles in the crosswalk. For more information on the first time the paper made this mistake, see

No, it doesn't. It only says a crosswalk is where the sidewalk would be if it were extended across the intersection.

Bikes are allowed on sidewalks? Do helmet laws apply on sidewalks?( not that those laws are ever enforced). Are there right of way laws on sidewalks? bike vs pedestrian.

There's always been a big debate as to what is legal and what is safe. The two do not necessarily go hand in hand. Was it legal for the cyclist to ride her bike in through the crosswalk? yes. but is it safe to do so? especially in the evening? I would say no. Both parties have responsibility for this accident.

What does the police have to do with anything? If you had half a brain you would realize I am talking about the city. And by the spelling on your reply it is pretty evident you only have half a brain.

light or no light, someone ran a red light if the bus was turning left onto La Habra Blvd from Beach.
