Meg, I was laid off recently and in this economy it is truly hard to find anything meaningful. I have been out of work for a little over a month and just accepted a much lower paying job than I had after several interviews and countless applications put in. I have a bachelor's degree, married with two kids. How could I NOT accept any help to take care of my family until I can get going again.

By the way, my wife works 6 days a week in a restaurant and I was doing part time self employed jobs (grass and such); I have paid my taxes for over 30 years so I THINK I have earned the right to get a little help when I need it.

I sincerely hope that you never have to go through this personally because it is quite humiliating and very discouraging. With GODS help we are making it. Afterall the scriptures say "HE will provide and HE is.

I hope that from this you will gain some understanding and just maybe some kind word for those that this may affect.

Of course, I agree partially with you. If people are not willing to work PERIOD, then you may be right (even though a little harsh). If they are lounging around and NOT looking for or willing to take some type of work then again I agree to a point as well. Your thoughts may be close to right but you expressed it very roughly! Please reconsider!

It is ppl like you that cause the problems. In one breath you complain about no jobs and then with the next breath you complain about the coal trucks. You want jobs and you want to complain about jobs. How ridiculous.

I agree with some people here, and also disagree with some. Madison DOES suck.
First off, people can't always just up and leave when/if they want to.
And as for "whats wrong with madison," they are right. And for someone to say that instead of bitching, they need to be part of the solution, well that's a load of bull. What are we supposed to do to keep people off drugs or make them get jobs? How are we supposed to fix the roads ourselves? Make the coal truck drivers drive safer? Build more restaurants or any sort of entertainment? WE CAN'T.
People being on foodstamps/welfare- Just, wow. You can't just blame the people either, it's the social workers who hand that shit out. Personally, I think you should get drug tested before you receive any kind of assistance. You fail the drug test, well, stop spending money on drugs and you can pay your bills or buy food.
Putting someone down because they got laid off and can't find another job? WOW BUDDY, you're a dick. You shouldn't look down on someone who is honestly trying.

Wow I say u hit nail on the head!!! I was born and raised in Madison and thank god I got away and was exposed to a big world out there courtesy of us army! I have moved back since then and I have to say its sad that the downward spiral Madison n other towns around are in! Btw no I didn't move back to Madison, I live in Putnam county not Boone

You don't have to be on food stamps to know that you can't buy beer with them. I hope your family never comes to a point when you have to ask the government you pay taxes to for such things for help. Some people abuse the system, but downing a working man who got laid off is too much..... In my opinion that was the original intention of food stamps, to temporarily help people while they recover from an unexpected situation. I'm sure the man is looking for another job, but don't judge someone unless you've walked in their shoes. In this economy very little jobs are safe and good jobs are few and far between, I wish you luck in not having to eat crow someday, or god forbid let your family starve due to you arrogance and pride. Try being nice, it would do you a world of good. To the lady whose husband is laid off, I feel for and don't let jerks like that make you feel badly. Your husband has, I'm sure paid a LOT of taxes to the government, so in your time of need they are helping you.
