Full story: Alamogordo Daily News

I'm saddened to hear that the White Sands Pupfish, Alamogordo's new professional baseball team, isn't getting much support from our residents.

alamogordo doesnt support anything anyone does. the desert dawgs play football and have to pay to play. they put their bodies at risk daily for the love of the game and get no support. sure they have people some would consider "thugs", but the sport keeps them off the street. they pay for their own travel expenses and all fees throughout the year and get zero support from the community. the people and businesses of alamogordo only care to help if it is for the younger kids or if it will profit them somehow. it shouldnt be that way but it is. It is hard to do anything positive in this town without the residents shooting it down for whatever reason. there are military guys on the football team, army and air force, who fight for our country and still play for the love of the game. one would think that people would at least support that, but no. the athletic director at the high school is a jerk and doesnt support anything, the people of the city care that people are trying to do something for the older "kids" to have something to do, and the local businesses wont sponsor because they dont want to fork out any money. so the pupfish sounds like a good idea, and it might have a little run in town, but in the end the team will be caught, gutted, cooked, and eaten up by the lack of support in this lame community.

I think that as a community we can make this happen. It's not like we have tons of stuff to do here! A summer full of good baseball sounds great! These type players are who we should want to see play. They really want it! I bet there's no lazy players at this level. From looking at rosters it appears they all played college ball, and many played pro ball elsewhere. I can understand hosting one or two of these guys might not work for all of us, but surely enough can to support one team. From my days of playing ball I can tell you baseball players are normally very likeable, polite young men who have a lot of little boy left in 'em. What else can we do? I guess we could give a little financial support and go to the games and cheer for the Home Team!! I'm gettin a supply of peanuts and Cracker Jacks! Let's go Pupfish!!

Get a grip people. Not everyone likes sports, or has the money in recession times to put on sportd. I would rather see the kids teams supported. If I want to see professional sports I would watch television. I will not throw my money on these professional sports as I have no interest in them, or the money to spare. Akso why support something where they promote dwi by selling beer at the function. Last thing I need is some drunken fool driving my stree )as a shortcut) while being intoxicated. If people want the team they will support it, if not at least you tried.

Mr. Johnson,
Exactly how many players are you sponsoring? In this time of economic turmoil, how dare you chastise people and local businesses for not taking on an extra financial obligation. A sound business decision is to check out marketability and demographics before moving into an area. This would be especially important if you have to rely solely on donations and sponsorships . Additionally, in reference to the negative conotation of "Alamoghetto" remarks across the state, what do you think people think when you say White Sands "Pupfish"? I could get behind "reaper" "predator" "raptor" "roadrunner" "trinity" "basin" before I would take a "pupfish" seriously. In the future report the facts...lack of sponsorships and host families may cause the start up semi-pro team to leave Alamogordo.. and keep your personal musings to yourself, until you have a walked a mile or two in everyone elses shoes.

Mr. Johnson,
When you talk of the lack of support for the team you are focusing your response on the fact that only 5 families have opened their homes for 3 months for a stranger to live with them. It is very difficult financially for many families to support themselves with the cost of city water and electric without thinking of adding another adult to the household. Why don't the hotel owners in Alamogordo show support by volunteering a room to members of the team, or owners of vacant real estate can volunteer to allow several members to stay in their property for 3 months.
I believe there will be a show of support in the form of ticket sales, revenue from concessions, etc. once the games actually start, though I agree with previous responses that the name "Pupfish" isn't very catchy for a pro team. I doubt they will sell very many t-shirts or hats with the logo. I wonder what type of person came up with the idea to name a pro team after an endangered fish with absolutely no appeal. I mean the pupfish isn't attractive or admirable in any aspect. Maybe Mr. Johnson can start a campaign to re-name the team and more people will be seen around town wearing the team colors.

Alamogordo could be swallowed up by a giant sinkhole in the earth and no one would care. It is the trough of human existence. If El Paso is an armpit, Alamorgordo is unwashed pubes.

The kids in this community do not even get support from the schools and the business only give so much support anymore, funds are tight for everyone these days.

Many of the various choir, band, cheer, drill, and any number of sports teams are not funded by the tax payers or the school budget. They pay all their own travel, hotel, food, gear, entry fees and more. They do this with all manner of fund raisers and the parents make up the rest.

We can't even support Middle & High School sports and someone things we can/will/want to support a professional team? In Alamogordo? Amazing!!!!!

Focus on HAFB and WSMR, Will there be better sports reporting in your newspaper? Will you have daily box scores for the team? Box scores for the Isotopes, Diablos and the Majors? More AP baseball articles so the readers are more interested in the sport as a whole? Free ticket giveaways on the radio? Team shirts and hats given to Little Leaguers? Special Little League days at the ballpark? Live local radio broadcasts of the games? Newspaper contests to be the ballboy, or singing the anthem? It can be a success if the newspaper will help. Find somebody who played the sport to report on it, please..

The city doesn't want to back a football team that has a sex offender playing for them.
I would distance myself from that deal also.

How can this community support a any semi pro team, when it can't even support its local high school sport teams. With good coaches and support from the community. You pay for what you get in this town. Good ole boy program in this town. Look at the history of coaches, band directors and community support from the late 70's all the way to the mid 80's.

If we had a decent stadium that I would be willing to pay to enter I would probably attend all home games. I don't see paying to go into Griggs field.

Ok..so some of the people making comments have some valid points. The problem with this community is most of the people here are NOT sports oriented. It is evident with the lack of support for all sports...well except soccer. The thing that is lacking in this town..is TRADITIONS and the lack there of. Also..the Pupfish? who's bright idea was it to name a professional team the Pupfish? and also, I dont even know what their logo is..there is obviously a severe lack of marketing for the team.

I could support the Desert Dawgs if they didn't have a couple of thugs and criminals. Not supporting that in any way shape or form.

I in some ways admire the effort.

It seems, at least on paper, that Alamogordo is trying to go forward.

It seems the city is earnestly, and desperately trying to go forward with this Pupfish endeavor.

And I know very well, that there are more than just a few selfless people who are trying very hard for this all to come together.

But, it could also be at the request of others, who do have agendas.

I'm hoping I'm wrong about this, and hoping that the big folks here stay focused, and put their personal gain behind what's truly good, and truly needed for this community.

Wow so many people that post are so negative and think of all these hidden agendas. Did anyone on this post bother to help get a team here, help pick a name, volunteer to do anything. nope didnt think so.....

I think it is great that everyone is trying to work so hard to bring something fun to Alamogordo. Everyone always says there is nothing to do here, its boring, and here the city is trying to do something that just about any other city in the United States would welcome with open arms and be happy to support and instead people are complaining they dont like the name, they dont like the stadium, etc. I am quite sure that if everyone supported the team the could eventually build a new stadium and have better things in Alamogordo. Unfortunately that probly wont happen and everyone here will continue going out of town for entertainment and spend their money helping to improve other cities instead of appreciating all the hard work being done right here.
