Born in'38 at NR Hospital. Trinity, Isaac, NRHS, USN. Left town in '75, never to return. There isn't too much mentioned in this thread that I missed. Lots of names and I noticed a couple I went to school with, George Roach and Electra Polychron, that are now gone. I didn't hang out in bars, pool halls and taverns and never have, so that part I missed out on. Any place to eat, I was there. Any movie theater, I was there. Ant place to swim, I was there. Since I lived at the corner of Elm and Center, I spent a lot of time at Hudson Park, Glen Island and right next door playing ball at Isaac. I used to walk to NRHS from home a lot too. Who remembers the Chinese junk that the Nilson family lived on down on the city dock?

I have a personal question about my grandfather's plumbing business. F G Hodges Inc, that was on Lawton St. He made the headlines of the Standard Star. "Dice, not pipes rattling in the back room" or close to that. There was always a floating crap game on in the back of the shop. I would love to get a copy of that page. don't remember if it was in the 50's or early 60's. Lou Gehrig worked for him one off-season and he had an autographed picture on the wall.

As they say, "Those were the days".

Heyggg, Did you live at 5 Elm? The plumbing shop was down the end of Lawton, near the typewriter store, I think.

I think the only place you will find anything is at The New Rochelle Public Library, they have the Standard Star on microfilm, also has other early New Rochelle papers.

Frankie Nac rat: No, I was across the street at 4, first house on the block. I know where the shop was. It looks like the library is there now instead down Main St, heading for the Thru-Way Diner when I was there.
Thanks New Rochelle Guy. I'll look into the microfilm. I'm as close now as I 've ever been since I left. All western states. I just noticed an error. I left in 1970 , not 1975.

Hi GGG,
You were born 4 years before me but the Name Electra Polychron sure rang a bell. She married my next door neighbor Terry Davis. Even went to their wedding.
The first time I went fishing in LI sound my uncle rented a row boat from her dad at Polychrons marina.
I remember the Chinese junk and the people on it. I think the father was a photographer on the Standard Star. Never met their daughter but saw her a lot on the boat as I kept my small boat at the NR City marina a few hundred feet away.

I remembered the name Nilson correctly! Here is a link for the story of the junk Amoy and reference to it's time in NR. antiquebookends.net/pompeian_files/ITM1092.ht...
I was just looking in my NRHS yearbook at Electra. Maybe I'm strange but I have always remembered her name because I think it's exotic!

Sorry Frankie Nac rat but I think we are from really different generations. None of your names are familiar.

Thanks for the great find Bayview! Can you see me on the float over at Hudson Park in that postcard? HaHa! I was on the Amoy ay least once that I can remember but my older brother, who is now gone, I believe went to school with one of the Nilsons. Maybe I'll migrate over to that other site and see if anyone remembers him.

Hey ggg, you also were born 4 years before me. You might've known my older brother Mike Nacarato, or some of his friends,Pete DeFeo, Louie Ingram,Bobby McAvoy, who lived on the corner of Davis and Center. I think Danny Wightwick moved to that house from Ga., in the 60's. I grew up over Berger's Deli/Restaraunt on Main, right across the street from the RKO. Next to my doorway was Kadins Florist, which came to be Frank's Drugstore. Right next door was the Soochow. Do you remember when TV'
s came out, a few doors up was Dumont TV store, right next door was Roaches News store, and around the corner remember Tallerinni's Luncheonette/Ice cream shop. Where the busses use to come. Do you remember The Big Dollar on Center, our local " Super Market ", lol, with the produce next door. You might know the Sullivan Bros. they were closer to your age, maybe Johhny boy, and Danny Corello, They lived down North near Trevi's

Frankie - You finally came up with a name! I think I ate in Bergers from the day I was born. My one grandmother always took me in there for lunch whenever I was over her house. I always got roast beef on rye with cole slaw and a pickle. I knew a McAvoy but I can't remember which one. Yeah, I remember most of the places you listed. Do you remember an Italian barbershop on the corner of Leroy and Division? It had a Chinese laundry over it. I got my first haircut there when I was a couple of years old and even after I got out of the Navy. Same barber! They used straight razors and his hand wasn't quite as steady as 20 years before. Was that the corner of Centre and Main where all the busses lined up?

Frankie - It was an italian barbershop! Of course there was a Vito! I've always been terrible with names so I dragged out all the old year books. It looks like I went to school in Italy.

Trinity 1950 shows a few that are no longer with us. I forgot some little punk called Jimmy Mullens that was afraid to even look at me! Let me look through the books to refresh my memory.

Richard - I lived at 200 Centre after I got out of the Navy until about 1970 when I headed west. I know the name McAvoy but I can't put a face on it yet.
