Pennsylvania is consistently ranked in the bottom of road quality tests. I deal with people from all over the country.... many people joke about the constant construction in PA, the narrow roads, the constant bumps on the road, etc. The whole country witnessed a mere 7 inch snowfall shutdown an interstate highway for days, stranding motorists. You tell me what the country thinks about PennDot.
The roads are not built to current standards. They show wear shortly after they are built or improved. It doesn't take long for our roads to return to a state of disrepair. I see this all over the state (my job takes me all over). And we do NOT have a high traffic volume. Look around our neighborhood.... Maryland, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey all have much higher volumes and much better roads.
Your message is very transparent. You must be affiliated with PennDot or the state government. That also explains your crazy idea to raise already high gas taxes. You are part of a dangerous contingent of people in this country that want to take, take, take from the citizens. The population is starting to catch on, though.

If PennDot is known at the national level to be such a joke, then why is PennDot's head guy Al Biehler becoming the president of the American Association of State Highway Trans. Officials? You'd think the rest of the states would not have voted for him if PA is such a joke. And I believe the past head guy at PennDot (Brad Mallory) was also the president back in the 90s.
The roads in PA are built to the most current standards. The weather, traffic volumes (esp. trucks) and elected officials' reluctance to increase taxes to pay for roads are the biggest reasons our roads/bridges are in bad shape.
The state has not increased the state gas tax since 1997, and the US Congress has not raised the national gas tax since 1992. Road construction costs have gone up by about 50-70% since then.
I guess

If we had another 4 more years & tolls on the roads most of us in this lame area would work for nothing.

Did you catch NJ Gov. Corzine's speech the other day? He is rasing all tolls by 50% every other year for the next decade to pay for NJ's roads. How do you think PA will pay for its roads?

PA has higher interstate traffic volumes than most NJ roads, and much higher truck traffic. PA also has more roads than NJ, OH, etc.

I am not affiliated with any govt. I just believe that the users should pay for the roads, which means a gas tax or tolls.

We have narrow roads because there is no room to expand without buying private property - and that property adds millions to road projects.

I am all for a gas tax. Better than congesting the highways which bring flow to a stop at toll booths.

Daily Horoscope for January 6

Scorpio

Don't let yourself be caught up in a crowd mentality. Just because someone else makes a major production out of what should be a simple matter, doesn't necessarily mean that it has to affect you adversely. You might be able to bring down the volume with a tap on the shoulder and a meaningful look. Even though it might not seem like it, your cool head is definitely appreciated at times like this.
