So, who do I send my otolaryngologist bill to, now that my eardrums have been ruptured and I'm bleeding all over the place? Thank you 'Burg, for having the most ridiculous "warning" siren ever. I'm so thankful to have been warned that it is a 70 degree day with sunshine.

Quit b*tching, big baby. That siren could save your life someday. Don't like it, move away from the station.

Thank you 'Burg, for having the most ridiculous "warning" siren ever. I'm so thankful to have been warned that it is a 70 degree day with sunshine. It goes off every Tuesday @ 7:30pm for the fire meeting! Shouldn't have surprised you! Any other time is to alert firemen, EMS, etc of a fire/accident! You'll appreciate it when it's you that needs the help!

Sirens are outdated. A thing of the past. Everyone has pagers or radios. There's no need for the siren. It's for "show".

That's just silly. A safety signal for those within ear shot will never be outdated nor replaced by personal electronic devices.
I do agree that EMS personnel have such items, though the audible signal is only complimentary in that regard, today.

Firstly, the specific instance of this siren going off wasn't typical... Normally it starts at a high pitch/volume and then gradually falls, then repeats 3 or 4 times. This instance I was referring to, it LITERALLY stayed at it's highest pitch and volume for two minutes straight; no exaggeration. I'm not sure if it glitched or if it was supposed to do that, but it was not typical and it WAS physically and mentally painful. I don't live far from the Skating Rink, so it's practically in my back yard. Secondly, that siren will never "safe my life" or "save anyone's life" someday. Lives are saved by the actions of people, either themselves, or other people assisting them. In fact, I'd argue that the siren is doing the exact opposite. The siren under it's regular usage has simply become a 'part of living in 'burg', which means should there be a real emergency, people will not take it (the sirens) seriously. There are other ways to get a message out to desired people without screwing with the whole town's mental state; the siren HAS gone off at 2 and 3 in the morning over the past few months... Just saying. Cell Phones/Pagers/LandLine "robo-calls" can get messages to people who need them without causing mass confusion. I will be moving away from this town soon enough; I'm just sharing my thoughts on what is a truly archaic system, and in the case of the evening I made this post, it was beyond it's normal "annoyance." Simply put, I feel a siren of that magnitude should be reserved for emergencies in which everyone must know to take shelter and or be alert... The posts in this thread are good evidence to support my argument. You say "It happens every 7:30, you should've expect it," and "How dare EMS/Fire Personnel be toned out to a call..." Well how would you feel if a siren went off and you just "expected" it and thought nothing of it, when in actuality, there was an act of terrorism using chemical or biological weapons, or a major chemical spill, or hell, and tornado touch down near Kroger and heading right toward your street (Yes, I know people tend to be aware of T-Storms, but you could be sleeping). The point is, crying wolf comes back to bite you at the worst time.

Actually the siren you heard was part of a yearly state wide severe weather warning test in anticipation of the upcoming tornado/severe thunderstorm season.

Interesting; I guess that would make more sense. It really seemed overkill for a "call to firefighters." LoL. Although, given that we had Tornado warnings and sirens go off March 1st, I'd argue that it was unnecessary; but to be honest I'm done trying to understand the mentality behind Ohio/American regulations; so many are beyond silly. Thank you for the information though.:)

You're acting like a baby about this. Get over it. The siren is going to go off when there's a storm warning, a fire, or a squad run.

You're acting like a baby about this. Get over it. The siren is going to go off when there's a storm warning, a fire, or a squad run. All I said was that the "mandatory test" of the siren which occurred on Tuesday, apparently forced by state law/regulation as a preparation for the "new" severe weather season, was kind of silly THIS YEAR given we had a tornado warning on 3/1/12 which necessarily activated the siren during a severe weather scenario. Because of this,(as well as the frequent usages to call FF or EMS), it is and was well established that the siren and system WORKS. Yet, due to state law/regulation which grants no discretion to local authorities, the people were once again exposed to the "Crying Wolf" syndrome, increasing the likelihood that an individual or individuals will not take a REAL warning siren seriously in the future. Your problem is that you are capable, but refuse to follow a simple line of logic, and instead, prefer to throw insults at me when you refuse to consider the perspective I'm coming from. I've considered your perspective (Safety first always, even if the procedure may be counter-productive... you know, the same mentality of the child groping/elderly groping TSA) It's your (and others similar to you in mindset) blind faith in regulation, even when shown to be illogical at times, that restricts critical thinking and turns people into freedom-less followers rather than leaders. This is why public schools have ridiculous 0-tolerance rules in which a Principal cannot make a decision on a case by case basis regarding students fighting, and instead, must follow "the rules" and suspend all of the parties involved, even if one student or students was/were simply defending themselves. It's your type of mindset that so many people share which results in wasted monies by local governments on illogical projects. For example, an article in the PDT on Sunday described the county's effort to "fix" the intersection at Center St/Dogwood Ridge Rd/Lick Run-Lyra Rd in W'Burg. They are spending $9875 on a "study," to be completed "as early" as 60 days, before eventually deciding on a solution to try out. It's your kind of mindset that would blindly believe this to be the right solution, to go through the "official methods." Yet, anyone who has driven through this intersection can tell you what the solution would be... A stop light! All it would require is to take the people responsible for appropriating the money, and sit them in lawn chairs on the grass around the intersection for 2 hours on a sunny afternoon. That's it. They'd go, "Ok, clearly when traffic starts to back up on Lick Run-Lyra, drivers at the stop sign start to get anxious and sometimes make bad and risky decision; we need to put a light which keeps Center/Dogwood green until triggered by a sensor on Lick Run-Lyra which activates after X seconds." BAM. I just saved the tax-payers $9000, and 60 days worth of waiting. You wouldn't have it though, because I'm using my noggin to think critically, and after all, we'd be better off trusting "authorities" who make illogical decisions on a day to day basis. Whatever, sir/mam. You've been nothing but rude to me and completely oblivious to rationale, and thus, I've nothing more to discuss with you.

These sirens and systems aren't new. In fact, in 2012, if you are still confused as to how they operate, you should probably take your holier than thou attitude elsewhere. They are not isolated to Wheelersburg and nowhere near the inconvenience that you've made it out to be. As a resident of downtown 'Burg for around 7 years, I live two blocks from the firehouse. If having to hear it every time a fire or ems run is dispatched is the the trade off to having a system to inform me of pending severe weather, I and every other rational human will take it. These systems have been in use since the 40's and 50's and you decide to complain now? Was it a slow day on Minford Topix? Perhaps you should learn the difference in the variety of tones and what they signal so you can make logical conclusions rather than petty complaints. I have a sneaky suspicion that you're one of those, never happy unless it's your way, people. Great, that's your right, run with it. You're extended problems result from your lack of interest in other points of view. Case in point: the intersection at the ridge. Everyone is well aware that traffic lights are used to solve issues at intersections. Since the intersection in question has a 6 point interest, a study is the only way a determination can be reached of the impact of a 2 point, 3 point, 4 point, 5 point, or 6 point signal. Or if a lighted signal is even reasonable in the first place. Saved the tax payers 9k did ya? I'd estimate you probably would cost the tax payers ten times that amount by blindly approaching a project without even identifying a problem or foreseeing a resolution. It's easy to talk big, but the shortcomings in your own life are probably indicative of the crap you're spewing now. The reality of which we will never really know, sadly.

Geeez, you would think that having an early warning system would be something people appreciate! I like it and hope that those who do not go on with ringing ears! Price to pay for staying safe. I guess when a tornado rips through you will be bitching about the steady blast that alerts you that you are about to have your head between your legs.

Were you there when a tornado hit Wheelersburg in the late 60's? I was. If you were, you would not be complaining about some siren that is too loud for you.
