While participants in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will spend the night walking to help beat the disease, the group is also looking for others to go an extra mile for research.

This definitely an issue to be taken seriously, but not all info is clear in the article. It's pretty weird that the newest engine is breaking down, but that's what happens when you run FIRE engines to the hilt to do MEDICAL calls. As far as the Broadbridge fire in a "4" story building,Engine 2 is a telesquirt with a non-rescue ladder on it.It is for last resort as an escape route for firefighters.I don't think they should buy a used truck for a backup. They need to get a system in place to replace trucks on a rotating basis, and do better maintenance and upkeep on them. And that's not a dig on the department, because SFD is a good department, but it's got to be done.

Here is a hint folks, did anyone see that they are finding that artifical turfs are hazardous?

So,why build one in Stratford at all? Use the money on a firetruck (s).

It's a no brainer to me.

Ah yes.. the Huntington Rd. station. Remember when that station was closed? When fireman Mike Hostetter screamed that the north end was doomed by the closure? Then, to shut him up, how he was given an assistant chief position? He never made another peep!!! Funny how a little cash can wash away the public good!!!

Here we go again..... WE can have a beautiful shower and office for the Mayor at Town Hall but let the fire trucks break down all the time? This is PUBLIC SAFETY here..... This is unbelieveable... Now people will be worried if they have a fire if a truck will arrive. It is just one thing after another here. I do not wish ill on anyone but I wonder what would happen if the Mayors home had a fire and the truck broke down on its way there. Would this be the only way we could get results here in Stratford??????

So the worst Stratford truck is only 6 yrs old. An a 28 yr old truck borrowed for back up worked fine. So why do we need a new $450,000 fire

I think you have mis-read the article. I believe E-1 is basically one of the newer fire trucks that is used the most. So at 6 years old its one of the better fire trucks SFD has not the worst.
If you continue to buy used equiptment then you will have more problems come up more frequently, and basically cost tax payers more in the long road. I know its tuff but you must look further down the road then the end of your nose.
As for the Shelton truck, yes it did fine FOR THREE DAYS. To expect any truck that old to run like E-1 does it will eventually come to an end as did E-7. Again stop lookin down the tip of your nose.
As for the comment made about SFD showing up to someone tripping over a side walk, usually SFD doesn't do these types of calls(BLS) but will do them when STRATFORD EMS doesn't have enough ambulances or none at all working, which happens more then you can imagine.
The public should come first not who's side your on politically. Do the right thing and spend the money.

About 80% of the calls FD responds to are EMS, the rest are alarms (usually false), accidents and other B.S. like people who locked themselves out of their house. Do you really need a $400,000.00 truck with 1,000.00 gallons of water in it with 4 guys responding to an EMS call where two of the guys take blood preassure and the other two watch? It would be more efficient to buy two light multi-purpose vehicles.

You know we just want to drive a new truck and look cool. Most of the time its parked at the station while we nap, "train", work out or tell stories. Then after work we all go to a bar wearing are newest "engine 38, rescue 3, squad 43.5, company 6789 KING OF THE EAST SIDE" T-shirts and try to pick up women.

The Council cut the firetruck last year that the Mayor proposed, so the Mayor is not to blame. The council is at fault for this one!

It sounds to me like somebody just want's to sell Stratford a new fire truck. Paging Jim Feehan
Thank you for mentioning EMS they are always forgotten...My question for Miron is,..IF THE OLD FIREHOUSE WASNT' GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE F.D. WHY IS IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR EMS!!!!!!!!!! It is dangerous and has many health hazards which is why the FD "needed a new HQ". EMS was supposed to go into the new HQ with FD, but FD said..NO!! even though EMS does more calls. If it wasn't for their First Response on EMS calls, there would be no need for a paid FD.

Lets see...where to start...

Ah yes, the leaking water. No one recognizes the danger caused by water constantly leaking onto the rear axle? How quick we are to forget fatal accidents caused by just that. No one recalls an accident in Waterbury back in the '90s? 2 Brothers were killed when the engine they were responding in suffered brake failure--the cause of the brake failure was directly related to the constant stream of water on the rear axles.

I guess that is a chance that Miron, The Council, and The Taxpayers of Stratford are willing to take. Must be fun to gamble with people's lives. Must be fun to not care about the people who protect you. Hope ya'll sleep real good at night.

As for what people are saying about this 6 year old engine being broken down and having to be temporarily replaced with 28 year old loaner - Im guessing that Stratfords engine, allthough newer, probably has substantially more hard working miles and hours on the engine than the one from sleepy little shelton.

Hey Weasel, too bad your 57 year old roof leaks. Try doing a little work on your house from time to time, christ, shingles are cheap, patch your roof. A water tank, hmm... I'm no welder, but im guessing its tough to weld a patch to rust.

That'll be all. Good luck too my brothers in Stratford. Stay strong, don't let the public's hate of you affect the high level of service you provide.

Cybart said he's requesting a new $450,000 truck and a $200,000 used truck, That's $650,000.Why not $400,000 on 2 used trucks you can have next week and use the other $250,000 to set up EMS in the old Fire HQ that's been abandoned.
Jez, The town has already bonded for the OLD FD building which EMS will move into. The Building is in serious need of asbestos abatement. EMS will pay back the town out of their own enterprise account which is made from insurance billing. i believe the total is about 2.1 million to renovate the building.

I think its safe to say that both our departments jointly have their problems and issues but when we work together we bring that 92% to 100%. Norwalk FD/EMS work the same way working towards the common goal of protecting and serving their citizens.

EMS/FD have the same problem with vehicles breaking down.

The departments need to look hard at the TYPE of vehicles they are purchasing and make sure they are reliable peices of equipment, make sure the manufacturers are equally reliable and can stand behind their product.

OTHERWISE ITS O.O.S for them!
