My Turn: Black people in Vermont

Full story: Burlington Free Press

Having lived in Burlington off and on since 1992, I stand as a central witness to some of the struggles related to being a young black male in Vermont. via Burlington Free Press

WHAT! We have black people in Vermont now!? When did this happen? "We need to do something about this to protect our phony balogny jobs"

The race card is played out. Time to pony up black people. The free ride is over. You have had 143 years of = education and you are still unable to graduate 50% of your race. Dallas schools LOWERED the difficulty of it's test to help make your race appear to have caught up. Dumbed down the intelligent kids to make the blacks look more intelligent... go figure.

If people want the confederate flag to be forgotten, they should also forget about slavery, free ride, affirmative action, racial set-asides, etc. Lets all treat everyone equally and stand on our own two feet.

If the free ride is over for the Blacks than it needs to be over for the Hispanics, the woman, the gays and everybody else. Which it should. People need to start pulling themselves up by their own boot straps.

Wow. Just wow. I'm guessing most of you have no idea what it's like to be visibly different and carrying the pre-judgements of the majority of people in power drag you down every day of your life. Until you know what it's like to be stared at by an entire bus load of people when you're stuck in standstill traffic, and have nowhere to hide while their stares bore into your cheek, then you don't have a leg to stand on in this issue.

To set the record straight, We Vermonters have been very tolerant of any race, gender, creed and political affiliation. We have some of the lowest levels of minorities in the country, but went the hardest for Obama.

The recent transplants have been a bit more "polarizing" than in the past, but we still like to live and let live.

Do the same and respect us and you will be welcomed no matter what.

ALL
As a visitor to your Tree Laden state, I observed that there were, in Burlington, a neighborhood of obviously colored folks. Seemed to like to dress IAW thier culture and traditions. Actually met and talked with a young man. Educated, a contributor to the city and a nice guy. I was not able to communicate with his associates, as they all spoke Somaliain,(sic), a language they arrived with.
Which is to say, the USA past, circa 1860 and on seems to be on the edge of the average Vermonters frontal lobe. Guilt? I dont think so. A desire to undo and repay, Maybe in some cases, but not a pressing issue.
Folks, color don't make the person. If so, my deep work tan would exclude me from the Northern End of Burlington.

Vermont views are def original, it’s probably one of the few states that will have the majority elect democrat for the president and then over half the state will go for a republican governor.
