Full story: York Dispatch

A pair of faded green flip-flops sit on the front porch. Several notes are taped to the side of a broken storm door.

There are 2 ways to lose your home.
#1 Forclosure = not paying your mortgage
#2 Sheriff's Sale = not paying your taxes
These are two totally different things, if the idiots in Hburg could see that by changing the funding formula for schools and eliminating property taxes, 99% of forclosures could be avoided.(as in most could afford the mortgage by itself, but not when we are taxed to death by schools) I don't think people realize there is a difference between the two. Anyone?

How many of these foreclosures were triggered by being unable to pay the School Taxes that have risen at least 26% over the past five years?

These aren't "tax upset sales" but if you can't afford the tax escrow on top of the principle + interest, you will be foreclosed.

Hey, who cares, as long as developers get to continue to create new housing developements and keep that sprawl going.

We just don't have enough empty homes on the market.

I am stuck in Taxillvania for many reason's , some that are my of my own stupidity , but some because as a conservative and a Republican , I had confidense that sooner or later a "TRUE" conservative REPUBLICAN(s) with BALLS would surface and ACTUALLY PUT REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLES TO WORK AND GET RID OF THESE POLICIES OF DESTRUCTION TOWARD CITIZENS. LIKE ABOLISHING THE THE STUPID DESRUCTIVE DEATH TAX , THE EQUALLY STUPID AND DESTRUCTIVLY UNFAIR SCHOOL TAXES , THE DOWNRIGHT UNAMERICAN MARRIAGE "PENALTIES" , and last on my list , but definately not the LAST STUPID , IDIOTIC PENALTY FOR LIVING HERE ( I have to get up and go to work to pay these insain ripoffs or I could go on and on and on.......) THE DOWNRIGHT JOKE OF THE MILLINIUM TAX OF THE :PRIVILIGE" OF WORKING IN AN AREA OF PA. > GIVE ME A BREAK. A PRIVILIGE TO WORK B.S. WORK IS A NECESSITY OF LIFE MORON INCOMPETANT GOVERNMENT THIEVES, ONE AUTHENIC CONSERVATIVE LIKE THE LEADER OF AUSTRALIA IN MY LIFETIME THAT's ALL I ASK! GOD SAVE PA. Sheriff's sales can be called on any debt owed and secured by a home's value. Most of them are called by the mortgage holders. If you check the online listings, you will see most sheriff's sales are for foreclosures.

Even a homeowners' association can order a sheriff's sale if you fall behind on your HOA dues and/or fines.

Once the court orders a debt to be settled by the property, the sheriff has an auction, selling anything on the property until the debt is fulfilled. So, for example, if I owed my HOA $1000, they could sell my computers and TVs first, get the $1000, give the stuff to the highest bidders, the money to the HOA (and keep a cut for the expenses of the auction and ever-present attorneys' fees), and let me keep the home. If the stuff cannot pay the debt, then the house goes up for sale.

Read up before you spout off.

Its no suprise people in PA are being taxed out of the homes they worked so hard to buy . Out of control school boards with no regard for the homeowners in their districts extorting more money every school year from homeowners already faced with hardships from high unemployment , utility costs , medical coverage , etc. PA needs tax reform now more than ever !! Vote out all the incumbants who cant even pass a workable state budget and those who have become out of touch with the PA taxpayer in the next election !! This state is run by idiots who have no clue about financial responsibility to the PA Taxpayer/ Homeowner .

Once again the reporters at the YD was not able to root out the true source of foreclosures. Start interviewing people in Logans Reserve and find out why they can no longer afford a $450,000 home. Also how many homes in Ryan Developments went to foreclosure? Also, can you tell where the PMI insurance is going? Also, can we get a breakdown of the age and racial factors in the foreclosure. Are lenders and real estate agent preying on one class of people?

How many people actually need a $450,000.00
house? How many people in York County can
actually afford it? Maybe the problem starts
with the home buyer, wanting more than they
can afford from the start.I hear it all the time,
I have to have 4,000.00 sq. feet, a 2 car garage,
a heated pool, a 150,000.00 kitchen, a heated
drive way, why cant I afford all of this on
$ 50,000.00 a year

Who are you to decide who lives in what house and how big it should be? I bet you are one of those people who want to keep the balcks in their crammed and falling down rowhouses. You gonna tell them they have to stay in their 'house' and can't move up because you think a bigger house is not neccessary. Boy you talk a good game but really appear to be racist.

To those on this thread: posts 14 and 15 are not from the real Semi-literate. I have a stalker who posts under "GOT YOUR NUMBER, "Arealtaxpayer," and about a ton of other sock puppet names, who is sending out infammatory junk. He's been attempting to mess with me for, gee, months and months! Which suggests how much I really p--s him off! I suppose that is quite a complement, or more probably a sign of how little else he has going on in his life! I suggested to him in the past that we all know he'll keep coming back, because he has no self-control to NOT do so!

Agreed! Taxation of private property for the purpose of public "education" is a communist concept. And how much of the insane school budgets go to elaborate sports teams/uniforms/tracks/fields etc. They always say: "public funded education is for the good of society as a whole" --- I say: RUBISH, look at our "benefitted" society. Let parents pay for their offspring's education-so people who chose not to have kids can afford a home...

amazing!!! Only A York Resident could find some kind of racial issue in this thread. You people need to get on with it. Does it not bother you that instead of your city being recognized as a desirable place to live to only looked at as a raciest clicky city? Are you not offended when your on the other side of the USA and say your from York, PA and people relate to your town as the town in the 1970 race riots who blamed the only mayor who really cared about the city. You people need to get on with this and establish some peace or you might as well just burn the whole city down and move to Baltimore.
