To gain what? All these travel teams have done is turn a good time into a business.
I dont consider it a bussiness when my kids are packing there bags on a friday night so excited to go play ball for the whole weekend. They have met kids from all over the state and have made great friends. I do know that the travel tourn. that go on at maple leaf bring a ton of bussiness into marion, people from out of town eating here, shopping here, hotels here. I dont know why they dont do the AAU or YBOA basketball tourns here though. The towns we go to have anywhere from 20 to 100 teams come in for the weekend and spend alot of money. I heard something, maybe wrong but it was because the county didnt want the school gyms used on sundays. Its a shame because it could bring thousands of dollars to marion on those weekends. Id rather my kids play ball every other weekend than set in front of a tv screen all weekend like alot of kids here do. At the age mine are, 11 and 13 im very glad they wanna play ball and stay in shape, stay close to family and friends. If you have a problem with travel ball most likely your child did not have the skills it takes to make the team. Mine go every year to a 3 stage tryout where hundreds of kids show up and they make the team. Some kids dont have the desire to play at this level, mine do so as long as they keep there grades up in school, in which they excell i will let them play.
