My last power bill ending on 12-30 from Duke Energy was approximately 60-70% higher than the previous month. This was before the severe cold snap.
In looking at previous years bills I have never had a bill this high. In passing I have heard several others say this was their case as well.
I now am thinking we were all charged excessively too much for that time period?

Mine doubled. I called Duke Energy, and they gave me the same song and dance about the cold weather, and then I told them I had been using my gas logs too, they didn't have an answer.

Same thing here. Mine went from $124 to $234. I believe they got a 14% rate increase in on us last month. It could have been a lot worse because that ask for like 30% but were denied. I e-mailed our insurance commissioner in Raleigh and thanked him for denying the 30% increase.

My Duke power service from Nov 24- Dec 29 (35 days) was an astronomical $585.00. My bills usually run between 150- 250 - believe me I looked it up. My highest bill last year was for the same time period and that was $313 - the highest bill I had all year. I emailed Duke Power and they said that my meter is read by the MOST ACCURATE method - the MOBILE METER READING unit. They agreed that my bill was way off from usual. They suggested I might need to check my heating and air system for possible malfunction and check my water heater.(these are working properly). The only change is that we have one less person in the household. We use gas firelogs as well.
Then they topped it off saying that if the meter reading WAS inaccurate that the bill should correct itself with the next reading.
Glad someone brought this up.

We have used the fixed rate plan for a few years now and it has been great. It is the same amount each month with no surprises.

me too, i called and they said for me to do a "breaker test" and that it was on my end. i use wood and gas --- no electric for heat -- thus there is no way this could be right. also, i replaced a 15 yr old washer and dryer in nov. with the latest energy saving models and we were out of town three days for christmas with family.
something is bad wrong, mine was over 70% higher

ANYWHO -- they will do an adjustment on yours annually so you though you may not see it now you will. its not as simple as you choosing a fixed rate then getting all the power you want at that same price

We have never owed them. We only use central air to cool the house in the summer and keep it around 75 degrees

We have a high-efficiency heat pump that does a really good job and we also use alternative heat sources on the very cold days. Our power bill jumped by $120.00 from the prior month. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Did anyone burn Christmas lights or does anyone know if customers still have to cover the cost of cities burning their extra lights at Christmas?
Since the "cold snap" didn't really get bad until later in December, it doesn't seem that the December bill shouldn't have covered that.

I just love the winter time and heat of summer. My utility stocks shoot through the roof and those dividend checks are wonderful. Can't wait for gas to go back up to $4.00 per gal. You folks just keep on using electricity and fuel like there is no tomorrow. The utilities will keep on hiking up the prices and I will enjoy my cruises because of my dividend checks. Love ya...mean it.
