3 Our power also blinked out for a split second, just long enough to screw up every digital clock and appliance in the house. |

Do you heat with propane? I've thought of getting one of those ventless propane heaters in case of a prolonged power outage. We were without electric for four days in January of 2005. It got mighty cold!
I wish DP&L and Century Link would offer a real Web site with maps showing current and recent outages and then a text listing of where, why and when it started and ended or when it is expected to be fixed. As paying customers, we deserve no less. |

3 We had one of those vent-free propane heaters a couple of years ago. It saved us during the ice storm, but after one year, the fumes were so bad, we took it out. Vent-free my eye! |

Oh?! I had heard they can cause moisture problems if you try to rely on them as your sole heat source but not about a problem with fumes. What make did you have?

We heat with propane, a few years ago we also bought a vent-free heater in case of electric outage. Last year we used it as our primary heat source with no problems at all and used < 500 gallons of propane in our 2200 sq home compared to 1200 gallons with our lenox furnace.

Thanks for the info, LCM. Was it a ceramic plate type? The plates may need to be cleaned each year after the accumulation of soot and summer dust. I've never had one, so couldn't say for sure, but we had ceramic propane heaters in a warehouse where I worked back in the early 1980s. They were releasing raw propane into the work space once the plates got fowled. |

That is interesting, Wlsfam. Was yours an open flame unit or a catalytic-ceramic plate job? A wall-mount? Do you recall the brand and model? I could stand to use an efficient heater with the central furnace as the backup instead of as the primary heat source. We burned a little over 1,000 gallons last winter as opposed to our usual 750 gallons, thus necessitating a fillup in March when prices are high. |

Ours is open flame looks like a fire place a corner model unit bought it at Lowes after Chrismas 60% off. I'll check to see if I can find make and model. We had always had to get gas in March also. We filled up last November and just refilled this month. It has saved us alot of money and still warm when we don't have electric. |

Use cautian with propane/nat gas ventless heaters. They put out a lot of moisture, which adds up to mold.

Bob adds a good note of caution. Each gallon of propane burned turns into carbon dioxide, a relatively harmless gas found in all soft drinks, beers and the air we breathe, and, I'm guessing here now as to the amount, but I would say close to a gallon of water vapor. Water vapor is good in winter because inside air is overly dry--up to a point. If it builds up inside the walls it can cause mold to form as Bob mentions. If I saw layers of frost and ice coating my windows, that would be a warning signal to switch the heating burden more toward the central furnace or electrical heaters, neither of which emit water into the air, and play down the role of the ventless gas units.

We haven't had any noticeable mold or moisture on windows in the 2 years we have heated with ours. Thanks for the info we will watch for this problem.

I remember being without electric when that nasty storm hit back in 2004 or 05(?). I lived on the north side of the Lake. It took almost a week to get power...and 4 days to get our neighborhood plowed out. Since we were in a township...we were last priority for the county trucks. Finally, someone in the neighborhood hooked a blade to the front of his lawn mower and got us all out.
I remember paying something like $700 to get our tank filled at the Lake. Thankfully, it was a small house and didn't take much to heat. Here in WV we have an electric/gas heater. Still no good if the power goes out! LCM, our power goes out every once and a while for about 10 seconds at a time. Not sure why either... |
