Either way, HHU wouldn't post as someone else. Keep trying...you're only succeeding in looking more foolish. |

We have the Bissel 2x Heat Steam Cleaner. Got it at Home Depot for like $70.(We think they had it mis-labeled lol. Didn't realize it till we got home and looked at the receipt.) It works like a CHARM!!!! I absolutely love it. I can shampoo the carpets whenever I need to. It also does fine on spot work and has upholstry attachments. I have 2 toddlers and a 7 month old German Shepherd. It's no bigger than my regular vacuum and pulls the water out of the carpet pretty well. The carpets are totally dry in about 2 hours tops. I also buy the cleaner for it at Sam's Club. It works well with professional grade cleaner. I would recommend it to anyone. As long as you have the time to clean it yourself! |

Buying your own steam cleaner is the most economical idea..... you can do it as often as you want... and you can just do a few areas at a time if needed... YOu can also buy your own Scotch Guard to protect ... One little hint I picked up from a friend who has thier own carpet cleaning company out of state.. Fabric Softener... clean your carpets as normal.. then do a final rinse with plain water and a capful of softner... not only will it make your carpet and upholstery smell wonderful for longer.. it will cut down on the static, help repel dog hair and will keep stains and liquids from soaking in as fast.. of course.. do a test spot first before you do the whole area..

Mrs A, do you have to mix up the cleaning solution before adding to the cleaner? I take it from Carter's comment that it's advisable to follow by a plain water rinse or a rinse with a touch of fabric softener. Do you *have* to rinse after shampooing, or is it just recommended. Also, do you have to wash out and dry out the carpet cleaner afterwards? That seems like a lot of work for a little spot cleaning! That is basically why I never bought one, figuring it would be an awful lot of work and upkeep. It's reassuring to hear the carpet dries in about two hours. Thanks for all the info.

That is an awesome idea Carter! Thank you so much! I'm all for the repelling of dog hair. My puppy sheds a LOT!!!
Molly, I don't have to do any mixing with my cleaner. There is a small tank for the cleaning solution and a large tank for hot tap water. The machine does all the mixing and spraying for me. It does an excellent job of removing the water from the carpet. I can understand a final clean rinse, but with the kids, it's not something I really have time for. I think the initial clean is sufficient for me. There is only one dump tank that I rinse after every use. It's really not too much hassel. It stays pretty clean. I always vacuum the house before using it. But of course, the pet hair sometimes lingers, so every now and again I'll scrub the brushes I can generally do 60% of the house (the main areas) while the kids nap. I then finish the bedrooms while the kids are up and out of there. |

Warning! Off topic comment! Brewer's yeast works wonders for shedding. My dogs love it and I don't have to hide the pills. They get excited when I get the bottle out and snatch the pills right up. We will now return you to our regularly scheduled topic... |

Never heard of it so I might ask my vet about that. We give her eggs and it makes her coat nice and shiny...but does nothing for the shedding.(Well, she's also getting ready to come into heat too...) |

My dogs are fond of rolling on their backs in decaying animal matter (i.e., carcasses). I've never figured that one out, though it may be akin to men's love of camo. "If I don't smell like a dog, maybe the deer and the squirrels won't see me!" Then they come and kiss me because I smell of brewer's yeast. Maybe turnabout is fair play?
You have convinced me, Mrs. A. A steam cleaner would be a practical and useful investment. And if Carter's suggestion really works, maybe the hairy dogs with their muddy feet will be repelled right off the carpet, leaving nary a mess while I steam clean their legs in mid-air. Thanks to everybody for all the tips and encouragement. |

I won't let a "professional" carpet cleaning company come in my house. The last time I did it stayed clean for only a few weeks, so I went out and bought a steam cleaner of my own. A Hoover. Cost less than the carpet cleaning job. I use it regularly due to having a couple of pee-prone pups and it took at least 4 cleanings before the water stopped coming up dark black. I don't know much about how the "pros" do it, but I do know they didn't hook up to any water at my house when they cleaned. So, where did that water come from?
I did get an add in my mailbox recently from someone claiming to do dry carpet cleaning. I considered it, but will probably stick with my Hoover. I will admit that I've gone through a few cleaners but it's still far cheaper in the long run. |

no you dont have to do a final rinse... but if you want to do the fabric softner thing you'll have to do that extra step...

Maybe you could add the fabric softener to the first rinse water? On the other hand, I suspect a second rinse might remove a little more dirt and cleaning solution. Are wash and first rinse a two-pass process (two separate steps), or are they performed one after the other in the same pass?

I would use the carpet cleaners sparingly, water in the carpet breaks down the fibers, making it old looking before its time. I think Scotch Guard is a great idea to help keep the spills or whatever from soaking in. I've heard dry cleaners are better, but the residue from some of them can attract dirt also. I think if you have nice flooring, area rugs and a swiffer are a nice alternative.

I have thought of going with all stone floors. A wet mop will pick up anything. It's pretty hard to stain them. So, the dogs and I will just have to wear those hospital socks with the non-slip rubber coating on the bottoms.
