Solar project could help jobless: Letters for Thursday, Oct. 28

If Gerda McKeehan was really interested in doing the best thing by California, she would advocate putting all that solar capability on the roofs and parking lots of Los Angeles rather than out here in the Mojave Desert. Instead, there will be a huge eyesore out here in the desert sucking up limited groundwater (such plants use considerable water to make steam and to transfer the heat generated at the reflector panels to the generating station) and forcing the construction of expensive new power lines and switch yards along the route to LA.
How much more intelligent it would be to install PV panels right in LA, on the roofs of the many big strip malls, warehouses and factories, and over top of the cities many parking lots, placing the generating capacity right where it is needed and in that way minimizing the necessity of building a bunch of new power lines and a distribution network for this solar power.
LA should put a big solar plant in the dry bed of the old Van Norman Reservoir and in the dry bed of the old Chatsworth Reservoir rather than ruin the desert further.

"The tribe contends the solar farm could damage Quechan cultural artifacts, as well as desert flora and fauna, including the endangered flat-tailed horned lizard that holds a significant place in tribal lore."

This is the best thing that could ever happen to California. We need to get off our dependence on foreign oil, and we all need to buy electric vehicles to help improve our air quality!!
