I was at work in the area where the accident took place when I heard about this horrible tragedy, it's so sad it made me cry and also it made me very angry I'm sure the investigation will find that the driver was more than likely intoxicated and I hope to god he is held responsible for his actions people like this should be shot, I have a big problem with people who drink and drive the law needs to be more strict with people like this, now there is a man dead and others injured because of one person's carelessness. My prayers go out to the family of John Venezia be strong and bring this man who caused this pain and tragedy to justice and also to the other people hurt in the accident...

you don't know what happened , yes it could have been someone drinking or it could have been someone
having a seizure, or an old person lost control, or someone blacking out from a mental condition, god only knows.

i totally agree it is wrong to be drunk and drive, hopefully that is what is wasn't , it would be easier for the family to cope with , if it was an accident that didn't result from someone drinking and driving, i hope and pray that wasn't the cause.

My condolence to the family , i will be praying for you and thinking of you, whatever the case may be, i am sorry .

This was in todays newspaper;

Witnesses talk about bizarre car crash

Police still investigating: No charges have been filed; most victims have been released from hospital

March 20, 2007
BY BEN LEFEBVRE Staff Writer
WEST DUNDEE -- Melissa Kolanko said she was sitting in her car at the McDonald's drive-through in West Dundee on Saturday, getting ready to place her order. It was a pleasant day out, and she was planning to take her dogs to the veterinarian to get their shots, she said.

That's when she heard tires screeching. The next thing she saw, she said, was the chaos unfolding across the parking lot.

Kolanko was one of the people who ran into the aftermath of a bizarre accident that killed one person and injured eight after a sport utility vehicle jumped the curb from the McDonald's parking lot and crashed into the neighboring Subway restaurant at 400 S. Eighth St.

She called 911 and then ran into the scene, she said.

"It was dusty and very messy," she said. "People were screaming and crying. I checked if a little boy was OK, and his mom said he'd have to get stitches. I saw behind the counter that there were two people pinned and bloody."

Amid all the confusion, she said, there was something stranger still. Kolanko said throughout the scene, she couldn't see the driver of the Acura MDX that police said started in the McDonald's parking lot.

"We were so confused," she said. "We thought, did the car just drive in on its own?"

It didn't. Police identified Shakuntala Rajagopal, 66, of Algonquin as the person behind the wheel during the crash. She was sent to St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates with minor injuries and released Sunday, according to reports. Her 68-year-old husband Kesavan, who was in the passenger seat, eventually was sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Information on his condition was not available Monday.

No charges have been filed.

Crystal Lake resident and Subway patron John R. Venezia, an accountant who worked down the street from Subway, died of injuries suffered in the crash.

Several area hospitals treated others who had sustained injuries, releasing most of them by Monday. A Sherman Hospital spokesman said Bhavesh Patel, the 22-year-old Subway worker who suffered multiple fractures after being pinned to the wall behind the counter, was in fair condition.

West Dundee police spokeswoman said the department still was investigating the cause of the accident. Police Detective Christopher Diori, who is investigating the case, was unavailable for comment.

To all, specifically Paula--The driver was not drunk, and it is horrible that people in this world are so quick to jump to conclusions and write hate-filled words without knowing the facts. Enough people are in misery because of this horrible tragedy--the family and friends of John, the people who were injured, the driver and her husband, and witnesses. It is a terrible thing, but what is much worse is ignorant people spreading vicious rumors and hate. Unfortunately, people like this are far too common in this world. I feel so sad for everyone involved in this tragic accident. As for the driver and her husband, they spent their lives caring for people--to have to live with this heart-wrenching accident, knowing the pain that was caused, the life that was taken--this will haunt their every moment. I hope to God they don't read what you wrote. And I hope the family of John don't either--they are going through enough pain without reading your lies.

This woman must be mentally ill and completely ignorant to come up with such allegations. Does she get her "facts" from the National Enquirer?
Paula, please educate yourself on what happened and feel free to respond with an "intelligent" response!
Am I refuting her desire to put away drunk drivers? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Those that are guilty should face the punishment but coming out with accusations and allegations without knowing the facts is uncalled for!

My thought's and prayers go out to the family. I do have to admit that I was one of the firemen on the scene. This was horrific and it is tough to put behind me as well as many other's that were there that day. I will forever keep this family in my mind.

I wonder if this was the first time that the vehicle was reported to have accelerated on it own ... what do you think ?
