Actually, the photo shows Wellsville Canyon. The highway goes over Sardine Pass, then descends Wellsville Canyon into Cache Valley. The "old" trail, then road, went down Sardine Canyon. You can still see the old road heading to the northeast and into Sardine Canyon from the highway, although it can't be accessed from there, as the highway cut ended the old road in a steep cliff/bank.
As for the name - some say Sardine Canyon was named because of canned sardines that were eaten on the trail. Others say it's because the canyon wound around like a sardine. Who knows? |
