Isn't it absolutely amzaing that only those in publich office always mantain.."I've got a head up here that hasn't changed one iota in the last 25 years."

That of course is [probably] the problem; while the rest of the world has moved on in the last 25 years Senator Byrd is still holding the ideas of 25 years ago...if one considers that he was once a card carrying member of the KKK .... that begs the question of if the head he has hasn't changed one iota in the last 50 years?

Senator Byrd has done more for the residents of this state than anyone. If you don't believe me, check this out. When in comes to issues important to veterans Sen. Byrd has voted FOR them 95% of the time. Rockefeller-100%, Rahall-100%, Capto-20%. Now who needs to be voted out? Capto has done nothing worthwhile for this state. And talk about personal life. While their personal life is none of our business, if you want to put someone down, she's the one who slept her way to the top. Who cares if Byrd was in the KKK. What Caucasian wasn't back then? Is he now? NO. Therefore, it doesn't matter.

And RCBI(located in HGTN, Brideport, and Rocket Center) is one of the foremost in manufacturing technology, and has greatly improved the quality of teaching this profession in our state, as well as, brought more much-needed business here. And for those who don't know RCBI stands for "Robert C. Byrd Institute” and its complete title is "Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies." And the new addition to Marshall University is going to help further our childrens' education and help bring more people to our state to further their education.

He has done more than just help the vets. He has personified what it truely means to be a Mountaineer. He has provided a face to the efforts of this state pulling itself up by its own bootstraps.

Thanks Morgantown local. Glad to see someone who is intelligent on here. Oh, sorry, there is an office in Charleston also.

Sen. Byrd is considered one of the more independent-minded Democrats in the Senate, despite his long tenure in the Democratic leadership. He has a reputation for putting the interests of the Senate and his home state above those of his party.

He also voiced praise for George W. Bush's nomination of Judge John Roberts to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Like most Democrats, however, Byrd opposes Bush's tax cuts and his proposals to change the Social Security program.

Byrd was one of the Senate's most outspoken critics of the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the "Bush Doctrine" of unilateralism and preemptive warfare.

On March 19, 2003, when Bush ordered the invasion after receiving U.S. Congress approval, Byrd stated:

"Today I weep for my country. I have watched the events of recent months with a heavy, heavy heart. No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent peacekeeper. The image of America has changed. Around the globe, our friends mistrust us, our word is disputed, our intentions are questioned. Instead of reasoning with those with whom we disagree, we demand obedience or threaten recrimination. "

He has fought not only for the welfare of WV, but also for that of the United States. Do not try to put down what you do not comprehend. It only shows your ignorance.

The man's personal life has nothing to do with his job. He has proven that he will fight for what is best for WV and its citizens. Not jump on whatever bandwagon is going on. He has done more for this state than some of the past Senators. Whether you like his personal background or not, he has been an asset to this state and should be in office until he dies. It says you're in SC, so why do you care anyhow?

What I don't comprehend is how the great people of the great state of West Virginia can be so blinded by pork barrel politics they will sell all in exchange for government handouts and then paste Bob Byrd's name all over it like it was the gift of life. The only way West Virginia will ever pull out of its economic tailspin is to oust Byrd and Rockefeller and put someone in there who cares more about the State and her people than they do of having their name emblazoned on a building or a street named after them. West Virginia has so much to offer, but its America's best kept secret...kept secret by those who would rather hold their hands out and say "gimme, gimme, gimme" instead of "look what we have to offer."

What I don't comprehend is how you can make a statement about Shelly Capito sleeping her way to the top as if you know that for a fact. Has she confided in you? If so, I'm sure she doesn't appreciate you spreading that all over the Internet. Interestingly enough, if you look at Shelly Capito's website, you'll see the same type of pork you see on Bob Byrd's site. And, by the way, I am not a Capito fan either...I don't care who she slept with, she's where she is because of her famous (or infamous) family.

How many cities do you know of across this great land that charge a user fee? West Virginia is so overtaxed it isn't even funny, but then the capitol city has to charge people to work there. Are you kidding me? West Virginians should be outraged that the State would even think about increasing the toll on I-77...if anything they should do away with the toll and invite people to come to the State.

Make no mistake, there have been some good things come to West Virginia like the Toyota plant and the FBI center and the University system is constantly improving. But, even that progress pales in comparison to the decades of repression under the Byrd fiefdom. Look at the latest census and the demographics...the numbers don't lie. The aging population is shrinking and so is Bob Byrd's constituency.

Yes, Senator Byrd has brought a lot of pork to the state of West Virginia...but at what cost?

Ignorance, my friend? I don't think so.

Yack, Yack, Yack. WV is not the only state that has tolls. And Ashland, KY has a larger user fee than HGTN. And besides, the user fee has nothing to do with Senator Byrd. That's the mayor's fault. If you had someone who knew what they were doing, instead of a kid just out of college, HGTN wouldn't need a user fee.

Senator Byrd has helped many people. And for that, they put his name up. That's their decision, not his. And RCBI is improving the state every year with bringing in manufacturing business and educating our young people in the trade.

Opinions are like a$$hole$, everyone's got one. But when it comes to condemning one of our leaders, there has to be more than the whining of "he was in he KKK, he has his name on stuff and I don't, blah, blah, blah..." No one cares. Numbers don't lie. His 95% on veteran issues, Rockefeller's 100$, Rahall's 100%, to Capito's 20%?

It's easy to criticize someone who's in the public eye. But to realize everyone is human, everyone makes mistakes, and to go beyond they urge to jump on the bandwagon of criticizing to see what has really been accomplished takes someone who is insightful. Something most people are not.

What a pompous.....

Pardon me your eminence, your insight astounds me. Maybe you could use your omnipotent powers to persuade the honorable Senator Byrd to find a way..in his waning years..to stop the mass exodus of hundreds and thousands of young people coming out of West Virginia universities because West Virginia has nothing to offer them...that is, unless they are veterans.
How about tax cuts...no, too Reaganomics-ish (and you know that never really works anyway)
How about natural resources development...no, might harm the great spotted horny toad or slick-backed creek lizard (where would we be without them lizards?)
How about tourism promotion...nah, we'd have to lower the fuel taxes and drop the road tolls to get people to come
How about economic incentives for new business...heavens no, the unions wouldn't vote for us anymore (can't have no non-union business)
How about government reform...are you kidding me, our unemployment rate would hit the ceiling (grandkids gotta have income from somewhere ya know)
Ok, let's just see how long we can live off government subsidies...now you're talkin'!

That's funny, because MU is ranked one of the top in the country for forensic science. And WVU is in the top rankings for its law school.

And again, tolls are needed. Many states have them. That little buck twenty-five is not going to make or break a vacation.

And if we kill off all of our wildlife, what's the state going to promote then?

Unions, they have kept food on the table for many families for many years. Without them there is no job security. My grandmother helped start the union at CHH for the food service.

And government reform would have to start with a new president. All Bush cares about is raising the gas prices as high as he can so he can get a rich as possible before his term is up. Thank god he can not run again.

For the record, you can go back and read my posts...I think West Virginia has wonderful schools. I am an alumnus...and proud of it. What I said was the state universities are turning out graduates, but can't keep them in the state.

Also for the record...I never said Bob Byrd was a terrible person. It's amazing what a person can do with grit and determination and no one can take anything away from him for his oratory and leadership skills.

But, given just enough rope, the true colors of the leftist liberal Bush-bashers comes out. Talk about ignorance. Bush has nothing to do with the price of gas...but it really isn't about the price of gas, is it?

Do they issue cards? I thought it was kind of an anonymous organization. Regardless... that's the lamest attack anyone can make on a person today. The KKK wan never a major bigoted, lynching organization dedicated to hating blacks, in the state of WV. Why? Simply a matter of population. Were there exceptions - yes but they were rare occurances in comparison to other states in the USA.

The KKK had a local chapter in my small hometown but it was a purely social organization. There were no problems with blacks because they simply didn't live in the area.

Those who keep saying our Great Senator Byrd was a "card carrying" member should examine the times, the area, and their own family backgrounds before making this lame accusation.

Senator Byrd is a man of honor, not a stuck up individual. If he meets you once and doesn't see you for a couple of years - he still remembers your name! He's not only done a lot for WV, he's been a true blessing to our entire nation - a voice of reason during unreasonable times. May God bless and keep him healthy and in service to our state and nation. Thanks Honorable Senator Byrd!
