Weepy wrote: <quoted text> It is specifics like you mention that others fail to comprehend when it comes to business and such liabilities, it is not as simple as propoganda such as "if they build it they will come" Sloganeering is dumbing down the country but that is another story. That is a major problem when it comes to discussing such things, some people expect simple comments to much more complex issues. To answer your question I dunno, Walmart over there is in a flood zone but that company is huge enough not to worry about it. I am curious why they were allowed to build in a flood zone. I don't know about Fl, I haven't checked or read anything on it, but in Ohio, the county I lived in before here, when it was labeled a flood zone, you could not get permission to build. You could buy or sell the land, but no habitable type building could be legally built on flood plane land.

Walmart replaced the KMart that had been there for about 8-10 years prior, Kmart got hit hard by those floods, they closed it in 2003 or 4 forget, it was victimized by Kmart's national recession of the time, it was a fading company and had been since the 1990's. My guess that is the best land they can find closer to the heart of the county that was big enough and next to US 52.

And I doubt there were other choices because most of McDowell's land is owned by outside interests such as Pocahontas land corp which NS owns, which is another obstacle the county faces by getting anything positive in there.

Over 80% of the land in McDowell County belongs to the coal companies or the railroad and they are hell bent on keeping it. You are correct in saying that it is a substantial barrier to growth. I believe that the completion of U.S. Route 121 (Coalfields expressway) is McDowell County's best hope of economic renewal. With the road, hopefully, will come a gradual influx of business and industry that will bring jobs. That road should be the county government's number one priority.

Strategy...you tear this poster apart on another thread for defending me about not posting personal information, my name, in a post and now try to gain alliance with the above comments. What law school are you attending?

I just rarely have reason to post on topix. I only post , when I have time, which is rarely and when it pertains to local or state politics. Until recently, I hadn't posted or read anything on topix for over a year- no time.
