Read about the true origins of the word "squaw" as related by arguably the most learned scholar of the subject:
http://anthropology.si.edu/goddard/squaw_1.pd...
Here's more about Mr. Goddard:
http://anthropology.si.edu/goddard/
That B.S. about squaw being a reference to female anatomy is just that--B.S.
In fact, the entire politically correct fever over these issues is stupid.
Yes, that reference is BS. But even Goddard says "I have never disputed the fact that the term is offensive". He also says "Everyone would regard its use to refer to a Native American
woman as demeaning (or colossally ignorant)". What I said was true, though. It isn't from the Cherokee language, and unfortunately, the word does have derogatory and negative connotations, primarily due to Western culture and usage. In fact, Western culture is responsible for making the word demeaning and insulting. "Squaw" is a corruption of an Algonquin term that means "woman". But hey, we stole and corrupted as much as we could from the Natives, why not steal their language and corrupt it as well?

Besides, if the guys are called "Warriors", what's wrong with the girls being called "Lady Warriors" or "Warriorettes", or even "Warrior Women"?

Works for me. I find none of the expressions to be offensive.

The Amazons, great name for female teams.

Don't know if these bronze age warrior women really existed but --- The Amazons are frequently discussed in breast cancer support groups.

Though school teams would not be expected to have one breast seared off...

"Quintus Smyrnaeus wrote of them during the Trojan Wars:

"In the pure rapture of triumph the Amazons charged, and with anguished groans and shrieks the Greeks perished, their manhood withered by the women from the fierce and untamed northlands. Like Goddesses amidst earth born heroes the Amazons pursued their reeling foes, dashed them down, cut them apart, and, scoffing, tossed them through the air - till the Greek formations dissolved in consternation."

Not surprised she wasn't offended. Squaw isn't a Cherokee word. It's not from the Cherokee language, it's roots are in the Algonquin language.

I didn't say it was from any certain language. I just explained what my friend had said about the word. This lovely woman was close kin to Chief Henry, the man who used to pose for pictures in Cherokee. She definitely was not offended by the use of the word "squaw" by any high school or anyone else. She and her friends were offended that the man who had started all of the aggravation over the use of the word had done so. They found him to be the embarrassment.

Well the "Banana Slug" is already taken. That's right, University of California Santa Cruz has a slimy banana yellow slug for a mascot.
Eat your heart out.
Here are a few more mascot names already taken:
Go Team!
1. UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs
2. The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
3. The NYU Violets
4. The MIT Engineers
5. Pace (University) Setters
6. St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics
7. The Long Beach State Dirtbags
8. Grays Harbor College Chokers
9. The University of Evansville Purple Aces
10. Evergreen State College Geoducks
I know, it's too bad that "Dirtbags" is already taken too...
Then there are all those "Trojan" teams. I find those to be a tad condomscending!
:*o

And yes, they have their Lady Trojans too!

Violets? Really? Do they shrink when they lose?

Dirtbags?(I don't even want to know the female team)

Oh, I could just go one and on here with this but I am too sleepy.

"Warriors" isn't the issue. The problem was the female teams being named "Squaws", a derogatory term popularized by old westerns.
