We're burning up down here also.. In my life I or the older crew (80's & 90's) have never witnessed weather anything like what has been happening.. Santa Cruz Co.
All the plants and flowers don't know what to do.. Everything is off.. Our plum tree came to fruit much too early.. The plums didn't even get red but stayed yellow when passed their point and dropped off.. We have fish in the bay that shouldn't even be here...Other types are nowhere to be found....One day it's 102 degrees on the beach and the next day you'll need a coat to got outside....

I see GW Bush mentioned here.. WHY IN THE HACK ARE WE STILL PANDERING TO THAT PERSON FROM HELL ? He does not give a god dammed.. All he is worried about is fleeing the country to stay out of prison right now... That is if his boy McCain can't get him off the hook...

So now President Bush caused the lightening storms also ?

Lefties need to get a grip on reality. Forest fires are non-partisan. Fire fighters are heros to every political party.

It's kind of funny how evil distorts the human face when it is possessed by it. I've noticed George W looking even more scary than he did at the State Of The Union Speech in 2002.

Gosh, wouldn't it be nice if there were still some National Gaurd troops in this country, instead of Iraq? Remember when they used to help with emergencies and disasters here, where they are SUPPOUSED to be?

Yes, I do remember when the National Gueard could help out in OUR nation. Thank you to all the firefighters and their families. I was a kid of a Div of Forestry employee. We could never plan a summer vacation. One time, my Dad collapsed on a fire. No sleep for a couple days. Still happens.
Everybody stay safe.

The fire emergency in No Cal and our response to it, is a good indicator of our resilience as individuals, as a community, as a state, as a nation. We are getting a good measure of how well we can respond to unexpected shocks.
It appears that we are entering a period of increased instability. The lightning storm that started the fires out here was a never before seen event. There are now 1000 fires going at once? Is this what they call a "black swan" on Wall Street?
From here in Hyampom where we have had smoke veiled days with 100 yd visibility, I've seen example after example of personal resilience and even humor in the face of terrifying prospects.
The Hyampom community is showing itself to be tough, resourceful and resilient.
The County, State and National levels - pretty thin, pretty confused, pretty weak but getting better as the days go by it seems.
Amazingly our Trinity County Health Services responded to the fire emergency by sending someone to our town of 250 with a care package the other morning. Delivered to the General Store, the package was found to contain a big bag of multi flavored condoms. Hmmm.
The laughs and ongoing jokes that resulted have sure lifted our spirits, but condoms in a firefight?

So Deb, just how many National Guard are still in California & the states as a whole ?

You made the charge they are all in Iraq. Was that just petty partisan sniping or do you actually have any facts?

I can't believe that fireworks are being sold in Humboldt County. In light of our present condition why didn't the Board of Sups put an immediate ban on the sales of fireworks? Look around you.

Our firefighters are worthy of praise and thanks. That's a dangerous job and they are fighting to save us! They are heroes.

I didn't vote for the guy and, really, I'm counting the days until he's out of office. But, boy ... I nearly pulled a muscle making a connection between President Bush and the fires in Nor Cal.

But...clearly...our National Guard Troops are stretched thin. They're doing things to mediate
the civil war in Iraq ... very heroic duty, too. They should be in the U.S. doing the jobs Guard members signed on to do.

We've spread our heroes too thin!

A CNN weather map made it appear that all of Nor Cal is on fire ... but, the "surge" is working Iraq and we see that Iraq's in chaos.

Oh ... this is type discussion -- praising our heroes -- I'd love to see on my blog.

Regardless...we can't say enough great things about the firefighters!
