Shenandoah Acres was sold to the Eavers Family for their private use. I have heard conflicting stories, but think they bought it to use as a Christian retreat. I was born in 1956 and from the time I was born until they 2003, I must have visited SA thousands of times. Camped there, rented cabins there, went every Sunday with extended family. I really miss it.

Thank you Debbie...I went as a kid when I was 10, when I lived in Culpeper and went again several more time after we moved to Maryland. The last time was in 2003 and was soooo heat broken when we found out it is no longer open. I was born in Charlottesville but didn't go to SA until after I moved to Culpeper...

I was very sad to learn that SA had closed. I went as a kid and now that I'm older and have children of my own I was looking forward to taking them ,so that they could have the same memory's that I had. Can anyone talk to the new owners to let them know how much the place is missed and see if they are ever planning to reopen??

Is is true that Shenandoah Acres is no longer open? I was trying to plan a trip there this weekend because I have not been since I was a child, but I stumbled across this forum and was sad to learn the news.

I live in the same county that Shenandoah Acres was in. My husband works just down the road from where the resort was. My children and I loved to go there. The resort is now being turned into a high end housing development, I think. I heard something on the radio today about it. There will be 70 some lots sold. They will have a pool with slide, park with playgound, and a pond to fish in. I asked my husband where that was and he said he thought it was were Shenandoah Acres was. I can't remember the new name of the developement.

Wow...I can't believe that it closed. I worked there 4 summers in a row while in high school at SDHS. I moved away after my senior year and was wanting to bring my kids there for a vacation so they could see where mommy used to work and play. Hate to see that it was gone. It kept alot of us out of trouble and gave us a safe place to hang out.

I went to Shenandoah Acres as a Cadet at Staunton Military Academy (Summer School) and loved it. I've been back there dozens of times, but not since 1997. Now I find out that it's closed! Now I just have the memory of riding that cable...

I believe Mr. and Mrs. Blacka had to sell it because insurance premiums were getting outrageous. A few lawsuits will do it. It is a shame. The place was an affordable getaway for so many people over the years. Yes, we will miss the cable ride.

Yeah I drove to it last fall for my birthday and it was closed, no signs, no notice, and it doesn't say anything about it on any of the websites, except this one, that i've found. it was such a nice combination or wilderness and modernity, i'm going to miss it. one of my best camping trips was at Shenandoah Acres, and I'm sorry that I can't share it with other people who have the love of camping that i do.

I went down to SA this past August. I wanted my daughter to see where I grew up and hung out. I used to be neighbors with the Eavers. Never thought they would do this. I was totally disappointed to drive all the way down there to see what I saw. I am still shocked today that they did this. A safe place for kids. Now what are the kids going to do on summer vacation? It really sucks.

I hope that one day the Eavers will consider reopening SA to the public.
It's such a beautiful, family friendly, and safe resort for little ones. Our children miss it very much.

I have so many many fond memories of that place. I, too, hope that some day the Eavers will reopen SA to the public. I have it from a couple of sources that they are turning it into a Christian retreat. I don't know the entire story. Every Sunday, as a child, we'd pack up and go to Shenandoah Acres. We'd go camping or rent a cottage. I took my husband there when we were dating, I took my kids there for years as they grew and was hoping to someday take my future grandchildren!!! I have started collecting SA memorabilia, old pamphlets, etc.

Okay, now I remember where I got that information. My sister is good friends with one of the Blacka daughters and called her when she found out that SA had closed. I also read that they sold out because of high insurance costs. Now that can all be taken with a grain of salt, because I don't know firsthand.
