Her medical bills are at $500,000. Mr Mandy's insurance company needs to step up. Let's get these bills paid. Her family is asking for donations to be sent to the Wayn. High School.
No donations, get after his insurance company!!!!!!!!!!

There are some people below the age of fifty that
have had more accidents than Mr Mandy's and in a
shorter time frame. I'm one of the younger drivers.
Example: Two accidents in three month - It could
happen to you.

I don't mean to say...no donations, it's just not fair to this family to have to ask. His insurance needs to take care of this.

Go after his insurance? He probably has a $25000 maximum policy with Safe Auto. So what does her family do for the other $475000 in bills? Something about the automobile. We let drunks kill folks, old blind drivers maim people, young inexperienced drivers kill their friends, yet still permit them back on the road.

Who actually had the right of way at the intersection? Whoever pulled out when they didn't have the right of way is ultimately responsible for the accident. I haven't heard any reports as to whether Mandy or Deshong had the right of way. And from the published descriptions of the intersection, I can't figure out for sure who would have had it either.

The real problem was Mandy was unable to control his car after what appears to have been a minor fender bender. It sounds like he became confused and accelerated hitting the kids and a house.
At the very least he should have a driving test before he is allowed to continue driving.
I'll bet he is back on the road already.

Why are we dragging our feet on requiring people 79 and older (I think it should be 65) to appear in person for license renewals where they will have vision testing and behind the wheel testing?

I am not going to persecute Mr Mandy. Unfortunately, I don't think he realizes how dangerous he may be on the road.
With that being said I can only hope that this family and other families that have experienced a situation like this step up and get PA law changed. Elders need to be tested after a certain age.
It's not fair to the elders to finish their life knowing they unintentionally killed someone and it isn't fair to everyone else because they could be THAT person who dies.
Come on folks, the facts are right here:

FACT

Fatality rates for drivers begin to climb after age 65, according to a recent study by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, based on data from 1999-2004. From ages 75 to 84, the rate of about three deaths per 100 million miles driven is equal to the death rate of teenage drivers. For drivers 85 and older, the fatality rate skyrockets to nearly four times higher than that for teens.

The numbers are particularly daunting at a time when the U.S. Census Bureau projects there will be 9.6 million people 85 and older by 2030, up 73% from today. Road safety analysts predict that by 2030, when all baby boomers are at least 65, they will be responsible for 25% of all fatal crashes. In 2005, 11% of fatal crashes involved drivers that old.

**Elderly drivers are less likely than other drivers to be in crashes involving high speeds or alcohol, but they are more likely to crash at intersections where they miss a stop sign or turn left in front of oncoming traffic.

THE PROBLEM

But most states do not require older drivers to renew licenses in person, and only two — Illinois and New Hampshire — require them to pass road tests, which can be crucial in identifying drivers whose physical ability or mental awareness has diminished.

States have tried a range of approaches, but for the most part they have struggled to establish precise standards for determining when seniors should be kept off the road while being fair to older drivers who remain capable.

State laws are inconsistent on the issue, according to the IIHS, which researches factors that cause crashes. Most state driver's license laws require basic eye exams but typically cannot detect a driver's diminished physical capacity and cognitive awareness. No state has an age limit on drivers.

Insurance companies surcharge drivers under the age of 24 for their inexperience. It is time to start looking at drivers over the age of 70. They should be required to have biannual license recertifications to prove that they can still focus and drive a vehicle responsibly. It doesn't make sense that there is a minium age to drive, but no age at the other end of the scale at which point you should be checked to see if you still can operate a vehicle safely.

The real problem is WHY wasn't Mr Mandy able to control his car.
How many prescriptions or over the counter medicines was Mr Mandy on?

People age 65 and older consume more prescription and over-the-counter medicines than any other age group.
Many of these medications cause drowsiness or confusion and make it difficult to focus. Many also have the unexpected side effects.

I wonder if Mr Mandy has anyone in his life to help him get to his Dr apts, the grocery store etc etc. If not you betcha he is back on the road.
I don't know about you but I am extremely independent and I hate asking anyone for help and I have found that many elders are more stubborn them I am. Hopefully I will have enough awareness to hand in my license but should I be the judge of that?

I agree, be sure to add a reaction test needs to be taken. I can assure you not to many people over the age of 70 could pass a reaction test. For as much as we pay in taxes, public transportation could tote these dangers around for NO FEE, yes no fee. If there is no ceiling on the age to drive then I don't think there should be a minimum age requirement either, if a 14yr old could pass the test give he/she a license. Whats the difference at this point immature or overmature?

This family deserves all the help they can get! Time off work, fuel expenses to go see their daughter, eating on the road, paying insurance deductibles and co-pays for a dozen different doctors, ambulance fees, Life Lion fees. AND, what if they don't have insurance? We all know the dirt bag auto insurance company will fight for years to NOT pay any significant claims.

Regarding elderly drivers? I feel when you reach 65 years of age, MANDATORY drivers exam at 65 and 70 years of age. At 71 and up, MANDATORY doctors physical exams EVERY year that must be submitted in order to retain their license. Not saying this to be mean or disrespectful, I'm just trying to suggest a way to make certain an individual is healthy enough to operate a 2 ton weapon.

Did you guys ever hear of airbags? When he hit the pickup truck the airbag deployed. Ever had that happen to you? It hits you in the face like a flat shovel. So if your 82 and the air bag went off, how would you react? and I agree, over 65 should be retested every 4 years when your license expires.

The ONLY way an airbag should EVER hit an 82 year old is from the PASSENGER SIDE!

My friend's son was one of the boys hit. The officers told my friend that Mr. Mandy's airbag deployed and knocked him in the face causing him to accelerate. So it's not meds that made him do that...it's something that could happen to any one of us. Don't judge before you know all the facts. I do agree that if we have a minimum age to drive we should have another test for drivers over a certain age.

This is directed at "WhyWhyWhy:" Excellent comments. I am within a week of my 65th. I have been a professional driver my entire life but realize as I age, my reflexes are not what they used to be. I have been told I am a very good driver but I know there have been times luck was with me because of my "inattention." It happens to everyone but age plays a factor. If nothing else, I think a road test should be required for anyone at 70 plus. This should be done every two years. 80 plus drivers should have a test every year. I know this will not be agreeable with some but it is a fact we lose "the edge" as we age.
