FORMER COUNTY EMPLOYEE AWARDED $100,000
By: Robby Thomas NAHUNTA, GA (06-16-09)- On the advice of their County Attorney Tom Lee, the Brantley County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to settle out of court with former Brantley County Sheriff's Office employee Vicki Stalvey for $100,000. Stalvey sued on the basis that her 1st Amendment rights had been violated when she was fired during the 2008 Sheriff's election campaign. Her husband opposed Sheriff Robert Thomas in the primary. Thomas eventually won the election, but County Attorney Tom Lee did not feel the county could win this lawsuit and advised them to settle. The county has insurance for this type of award that will pay $80,000, leaving the other $20,000 to come from Brantley County taxpayers. |
