"WHOLE PAYCHECK" for what? If you buy chicken or shrimp from the "fresh" counter, it only stays good for that ONE night and the next morning it stinks. In this economy, you'd have to be nuts to waste money there.

Whole Foods opens on the North Side is not news. If they opened one on the Southwest side, say, near Midway Airport, that would be news. My point exactly.

Actually if you've been to the one on Canal and Roosevelt, there are more than white yuppies that shop there. people who have health restrictions need to shop there. Lots of African Americans shop at Whole Foods. So don't be so blind.

You are correct, Rob. My wife and I shop at that one fairly often, and in fact there is a diverse customer base there. I sit corrected.:)

How come each parking space doesn't have an electric outlet to plug in my batteries for recharging as I shop? Outlets powered by the photovoltaic cells mounted on the roof?
For that matter, where does the power for the refrigeration and cooling come from? What happens to the grey-water? Just another grocery store with a story, but no substance.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Our nickname for Whole Foods is "Whole Paycheck". I went to Jewel and found the same strawberries for $2.00 less. Honestly, why do people patronize this store?

Guess now that they've driven all competitors out of business with sleazy business practices, they can afford to raise prices like the good monopolists they are.
Don't forget joining a co-op. At least 40% off right there.

I wish they would build a Whole Foods on the Southwest Side, or at least in the SW burbs. Um, we Southsiders like organic, locally grown food, too! Oh, and some of us can actually afford it! Jeez.

Gee, JMO, why don't they provide us gas for our cars as well? And wash them as we shop! And how about a free massage. It's an expensive store, if you all don't like it, don't shop there! It's not for people like you, it's for people who make much MORE $ than you, so don't complain. Go shop at Aldi. Go grow your own vegetables! Quit complaining about what you can't have. Do you complain about people who drive Porsches?

I doubt they will build one on the SW side or in the Southwest Burbs. Whole Foods, like the "Apple" company, spends a lot of money and time researching where they will build their stores. The income of local residents has to match a certain level in order to build the store. Sorry to say, but even though you live in the SW area and can afford it, the demographic and city information for that area is not high enough to support a store.
For example, the average income for 60657 (Lakeview) is 63,000 per person. In my hometown in SE Michigan, it's 30,000. That is why the closest Whole Foods to me is 30 miles away, in an area where people make double that

Don't let all that "team leader" fluff fool you into thinking that the employees at Whole Foods get treated any better than the ones at other grocery stores. If anything, Whole Foods is a blatant union buster and they pretend to run some kind of cooperative enterprise, which just isn't. Instead, just like Starbucks and Home Depot, they run locals out of business and bring fewer dollars to the local economy than they'd like you to believe. The products they carry are marked up severely. As a former grocery worker in the industry who knows what distributors charge for things like Newman O's and Annie's frozen pizza, I'm appalled at their prices. Healthy organic food that doesn't have artificial ingredients and hydrogenated oils should be available to people of all income brackets. If it's a "gathering place" for the community... that would be the upper class community.

I gotta say, Jewel and Dominics aren't that much better on price. Try Stanley's for produce. It's appalling that Whole Paycheck seems to be one of the only places in the Midwest that peddles organic food. I go to Trader Joe's myself when I need packaged and frozen food. They're definitely more affordable and have less attitude. Every other store has this weird little corner of "natural" foods that are way overpriced. It's better than nothing, but it's time we demanded better quality food at ALL of our local markets rather than giving Whole Foods every last penny.

yep..this is news...unfortunately it leaves another large empty building.
I hope it turns a profit..it isn't in a very good location...it;s only accessible from North Ave because it sit on the edge of the River. North Ave is a very very busy street especially around the bridge crossing which is under construction.
The bridge is NOT under construction. It has been fihished for, oh, at least a year. I guess you don't go there much.

Personally, I love the new store. I sure hope they can sell all that good stuff, but it is impressive for sure.
