Full story: Monterey County Herald

The Herald reports that 66 percent of voting Pagrovians, just shy of the two-thirds majority needed, supported Measure J's $96 parcel tax to support Pacific Grove's public library.

Francois Melese voted against our community supporting our library and in favor of the library existing at the whim of a few interested individuals. This position of each individual paying only for the things he wants at the moment is what has put our state and our town near bankruptcy. Would Melese want the fire department to be supported the same way, our police force, the US military? We established this system of minority rule quite a few years ago now and it has been a disaster. PG, the state, and the country are now controlled by one third of it's citizenry. I think it will take a complete collapse of our infrastructure and our institutions before we will reverse this tragic tight fisted and small minded error.

Wayne Schapper, you are not alone in being disappointed by the lack of media ability or interest in verifying claims made by individuals. Take Carmel, for example. The Herald functions at best as stenographers and at worst as uncritical propaganda purveyors for their favored sources. There is not a story that does not have unverified claims and falsehoods by the mayor or city administrator and corrections are never published. As one staff writer put it, its called advocacy. Of course, advocacy in editorials is a given, but he was a so-called news writer. And of course, the same standards for accuracy prevail for editorials and news articles. But The Herald does no fact checking or corroboration. As the last executive editor said, we print what we are told and it continues to this day.

Yep, let's forget about a consensus of the people, and just let the majority rule. It's 2/3rd's for a very good reason, and it's not going to change because people want it to be difficult for our governments to raise taxes on us.

The correct message is sent to the local city council, that they must get their priorities straight.

By the thin margin of defeat, I believe people will realize they need to be more active in their local governments. This, is a good thing.

The community will come together and find another solution, and it was a gracious gesture by Francois Melese to lead a possible fund raiser to save the library with a contribution.

The PG problem is bigger than just the library. The city manager told the council yesterday that they will need to find another $4 million if they want to continue to maintain the current level of all city services into the future.

Maybe they will need to borrow those Measure J funds to meet other obligations?

Can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.

Course a few of PG's millionaire's could come to the rescue. Chances of that is about nil.

Whew!! Wayne Schapper has it in for Brett Landon but he makes a good point that the average income of a Salinas family is $45k. How many people who work for the city of Salinas make more than that?

Daily Horoscope for December 30

Capricorn

Get together with someone you respect and admire because you'll really enjoy their company. The conversation could soon turn to highly personal areas, yet there won't be any hesitation in talking straight from the heart. At some point you'll be in the mood to think about your New Year resolutions. Maybe you should write them in next year's diary so you can keep referring to them.
