Looks like the crackdown and all that jazz is really working...Good job D.C. and Lanier.
Yeah, so anyway it's probably about time that lawful people can defend themselves and carry a weapon. |

AH..Its going to be a long Summer in DC..
We didnt have all this KILLING Schytt when Barry ran things in the 70's/80's.. Then again the mentality of kids was different then.. We worked & went to school! |

2nd Amend,
I'm all for the right to bear arms...but, the people getting killed and shot for the most part in DC are not law abiding citizens. They're drug dealers and other bacterial scum in the hood. For all you who are offended by some of the racially toned comments. The truth hurts huh? |

Who thought Fenty and Lanier were going to make a huge dent on crime?
Wrong! |

The sad part about this is that out of 8 comments only 1 if from someone who claims to live in the city. Yes, something is wrong, but how different is this from the days of Jessie James? or more recently Bin Laden? or the IRA vs Catholics? or even this WAR ON TERROR?(now that's funny) If you look back in history EVERY Race has had a tough time; but think about this.... Black Americans DID NOT ASK TO COME HERE. They were stolen from their land by WHITE AMERICANS, just like WHITE AMERICANS stole land from the Native AMERICANS. So to clarify, black americans kill themselves, while white americans steal and kill whomever to get whatever it is that they want... Offer up real solutions, and take into consideration each and everyone of you has benefited from the sweat of Black America, and not all Black Americans are bad people.
Like I tell the children I teach in the public school system, "if you are not going to be part of the situation, please do not be part of the problem" |

Poor people without an education of any race in any society of any country are much more likely to have these values. The high school dropout rates are increasing when they should be decreasing. What are all these millions of dropouts going to do with their lives other than turn to the streets and crime?
Education is the solution and should be one of the major issues of any presidential candidate, but yet it is not a Major issue for any of them. Family values run a close second. |

Hey, I live close enough to the city, and go into the city enough, to not feel bad commenting on this story.
CapsFan - While it may be true that a lot of the victims and perpetrators in these shootings are not law abiding citizens, that just makes arming the good guys that much more important. The police cannot do it, and they in fact have no obligation to do it. What it boils down to is your own ultimate responsibility to protect yourself and yours from these guys. The racist stuff aside, having a government take away a right that they don't even have the authority to give makes no sense. The right to defend myself was not granted by the constitution, the constitution merely acknowledged that the right pre-existed the government...and as such the gov't cannot infringe a right that is inherent in human beings. |

On a related note... does anyone fail to see the strong correlation between the high violent crime rates in the cities with the strictest gun laws? Chicago? Baltimore? DC? It is no coincidence. Police don't use firearms because they look cool, or sound nice when you fire them, or because they treasure blued steel...they use firearms because a firearm is the most effective tool to protect your life with.

My last comment here as I feel like I've already said too much...
Well said Alan, and good point. |

Taking officers time off away and making officers walk around and be visible does nothing to curb crime. If someone wants to shoot they will even with an officer in the block. Stop punishing the officers families and throwing money at the problem. Let them shoot and the police can come in after and pick up the bodies. I want my day off!!!

The only actions that will stop the violence are the people who reside there. The community must get involve and stop harboring these thugs. The majority of crimes, someone in the neighborhood know who the perpertrator is but refuse to give the information to law enforcement. As long as this continue, the havoc in our comunity will continue because sooner or later you too will be a victim of the thug next door.

yep, uh huh. My point proven! I would have expected the R- word to be uttered by the politically-correct panzies such as yourself who put their head in the sand. The truth hurts, doesnt it??? When are you pinkos going to realize that blacks make up about 15% of the American population but commit two-thirds the crime???? Get a clue, dimwit. And stop with the racist acccusations. An education would behoove you. |

I live in DC and things are out of control. This IS NOT the fault of the police; rather, it's the fault of an entire city that is being far too soft on crime and outdated laws that fail to punish criminals who carry guns. Things have gotten so bad that I fear we need to call in the National Guard in order to get handle on what is taking place. We need a troop on every single corner. It's only a matter of time before bullets start taking people out while they are sitting in their living room. Maybe our Mayor should intervene before this happens. While I agree all the redevelopment efforts are important, so are the lives of the citizens who live here, pay taxes, and want to keep their neighborhoods safe.

If you idiots think that race (blacks) has nothing to do with a city's crime rate, then expalin to me why the blackest cities in the country have the highest rates of violence....Detroit (really black), Baltimore (black), Philadelphia (black), Atlanta (really black) your own Washington DC (way black), Memphis (black too), New Orleans (way black), St. Louis (a majority black) and others I dont have time to mention. Get a clue, people.

Hey, I agree with you to an extent. I don't think that officers should be penalized for the violent crime, and that is what is essentially happening. I've done ride-alongs with officers and seen how hard they all work. Officers need their days off if we're going to keep them. That being said, the city needs to do something because there are many law-abiding residents who are being put in danger. While I'm not out at 2AM, many of the shootings have been happening in broad daylight as well, times when most people are coming home from work or out running errands. Bullets don't have names on them when they come out of a gun and unless the city wants to start giving these thugs target shooting lessons, we need to do something fast. I am fully in support of calling in the National Guard (or what's left of it) or putting every city official out on a corner with an AK47. This city needs to start locking up the drug dealers, thugs, and criminals for good. No more parole, no more pansy-a** sentences for jerks who jeopardize the lives of others. This city needs to get SERIOUS about crime. Otherwise, all the people like myself (i.e., the ones who pay taxes, buy homes, and basically support this city) will once again flee to the safety of the suburbs, to jurisdictions where crimes are dealt with seriously and swiftly.

I fully agree with u!!!!!! I live in the DC/Baltimore area and believe me crime in the two cities are very high. I am going to give u a few statistics in the homicide rates from last year: Baltimore: 280 homicides DC: 180 homicides Chicago: 400 homicides Philadel: 380 homicides N. Orleans: 270 homicides Atlanta: 126 homicides Just to mention a few cities. Add all that up and it equals to 1736 homicides in just these six cities last year alone. I can't even imagine the combined total throughout every majority black city in the country. So yes, a whole bunch of black folks in one place at the same time equals a whole bunch of trouble |

As a new home owner and District resident, I am finding nearly impossible to speak well anymore of my new home as the violent crime level appears to be rapidly increasing.
I am a single woman. I own in SE. I attend evening classes and I enjoy walking and exploring my neighborhood, but given the District's dangerous happenings, I am finding for the first time .... fear. Fear in my home, which is likened unto living in a terroristic environment. What will it take to secure the city? |
