Does anyone know what gets rid of these large winged bugs, some call them mosquito eaters or mayflies? I looked online, and it just states they have short life span and are in mating season. I'm not kidding when I say I have swarms of these bugs. If you walk on the grass, they will fly around, their are hundreds of them. Help.

I too have them...we've had alot of rain lately and this is helping their breeding. I thought they were mosquitos, but I would like to find out how I can get rid of them before I drop $100+ bucks on a weed guy

Ya! I have the same thing in my room! I saw something in the corner of my eye and it was a very large bug, that looked like a huge mosquito. I got very scared but after looking them up on the computer for over 2 hours I got a good idea what they were. They don't bite humans or even eat mosquitos...thats just a name. They only eat nector sometimes and if they don't they don't eat at all. They are just ment to be born, mate then die. So have you tried spraying your lawn down with cold water? Try that. It will make them leave and it will bug the larva, so they might start going to someones else's lawn..Lol. Hope this helped!

You cant get rid of them. They breed in water, and spend about 2 years in water. They emerge for about 30 hours, and then die. The emergence should only go for about 6 to 8 weeks though. Keep your doors closed, use screens and screen doors, and wait out the emergence.

Seems like that the only answer to these over populating bugs is a good old fashion bug zapper or a bottle of aresol hairspray and a lighter!!!!

I hate them as much as all of you do(probably a lot more) but has anyone tried duct taping a can of WD-40 in the spraying position and throwing it out the door? That stuff can kill people, it's a safe bet that it can kill a tiny little bug. Besides, WD-40 can fix anything!

I've been fighting them 3 wks., with bug spray, water hose (don't do this), a vacuum hose, vinegar & water, garlic spray, a leaf blower, and all are temporary fixes. I'm at my wits end and ready to move. Millions/Trillions love my deck and are keeping me inside. There must be something they don't like.... Help!!!!

Look, if you live near clean water you will have may flies. They only live as flies for about 36 hours. After that they die. SO YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT SINCE THEY DIE AFTER A DAY BY THEMSELVES.
end of the story, and enjoy the bugs

Mayflies are aquatic insects whose immature stage called nymph usually lasts one year in freshwater. The adults are short-lived, from a few minutes to a few days depending on the species. About 2,500 species are known worldwide, including about 630 species in North America. Common names for mayflies include "dayfly", "shadfly", "Green Bay fly", "lake fly", "fishfly". Most species feed on algae or diatoms, but there are a few predatory species. The naiad stage may last from several months to several years, with a number of moults along the way. Mayflies are a favourite food of many fish.

Fish flies are a pest. I normally shut off all lighting, however, this morning they were still there with no lighting. I do know that the birds like to eat them, however, there are some many that the birds cannot eat all of them. The fish flies need oxyogen and so do we. They love light colors like white and off white and once they land on you, you have to pick them off! They stick like glue. I'm thinking that a lit cigarette/cigar might keep them away from you or fire. However, you don't want to burn down anything in the process.
