Sally, I used to spend afternoons at your grandmother's house when I was a little boy. I called her Aunt Pearl. She was a wonderful person, who was always very kind and generous to me. She would play checkers with me and always had some small treat for me.

We lived 2 blocks west of her at 406 West Pine, so I could walk to and from her house. It was a great era for being a kid. By the way our phone number was 499.

I no longer live in Warren, but feel very blessed to have grown up there and to have known some of the wonderful people who made Warren such a wonderful family town. Certainly, "my" Aunt Pearl was one of the best.

Hi Sally, I grew up in Warren and Weiss' Jewelers was my family's jewelry store. I was Suzanne Weiss then. Weiss' closed in the last seventies after the big fire, although the jewelry store was unharmed. The building now houses Ganaway's Drug Store. I remember the ashtray and I have one just like yours. I see you are in Asheville. I'm further west in Murphy in the western mountains.

My grandfather was from Warren and my father was raised there. I've only been there a couple of times. I still have some of my Dad's "memorabilia" from Warren. For example an ashtray (when when smoking was still popular enough that such things were an advertising gift) from Weiss' Jewelers, 104 S. Main St. It has a 3 digit phone #- ust've been a while back, eh? Is there still a Weiss'Jeweler's?

I was born in Warren 9:00am 1936.My grandfather was James(Jim)Craig who used to drive a Model T Ford truck. My grandmother was Mae (Lyon) Craig.I left warren when a young boy.I lived in Lincon County,Jefferson County and anybodys county. When I was 17 I enlisted in the US Air Force and left Arkansas.I have been to places most people just dream of.I have done many things with my life in the military.I spent 8 years in the military and would not trade a day of it.When I was discharged in Oklahoma I came to Dallas,TX to live.I lived in the City of Mesquite TX for 36 years. There are many good memories of living in Warren.Sometimes I hear the voice of the little boy ghost in that grand era of time As evening fell upon a peaceful country time.I miss Warren.

I keep up some with the Eagle, I actually used to sell them as a boy on Pine St., growing up in Warren. Some of the other places not mentioned were the Mad Butcher and Wayne's Cafe/Pool Hall. I spent many a afternoon shooting snooker at Wayne's. While living in Norman OK., I met Barry Switzer in downtown Norman and introduced myself as a Warren Native. He had a surprising look on his face and started telling me stories of hanging out in Warren in the 50s. I know there are many in Arkansas that don't favor Mr. Switzer, but he was very fond of Warren. He mentioned to me one time shooting pool at Wayne's with Larry Lacewell and there was a big commotion at the front cafe section. A man came in wearing a big fur coat and stetson hat. After getting a better look at the fellow, they realized it was Paul Bear Bryant coming in to have lunch. It was also interesting that Mr. Switzer felt compelled to introduce me, someone from Warren, to a friend of his...Toby Keith. I was a little dumbfounded and couldn't believe that Toby Keith even knew where Warren was? Needless to say Warren was a good place to grow up, being the small town it was. I now live in NC and enjoy the East Coast very much, but will always have strong ties to Arkansas...especially the Razorbacks.
It would be nice if the Warren Eagle Democrat was available online on the internet. I would read it much more regularly if that was the case.

Hi Wayne, I don't know if you remember me, but I'm Suzanne Weiss (although I go by Sam Hoffer now). My father had a jewelry store (Weiss Jewelry) next door to your Owens, your Dad's store, on the square in Warren where the First State Bank is now. I see you live in NC - so do I. I have a website - www.mycarolinakitchen.blogspot.com - stop by when you get a chance. I too wish the Eagle was online.
