Long Island Cares was founded in 1980 by the late singer/activist Harry Chapin in response to the immediate needs of hungry Long Islanders. Twenty-seven years after his passing, Long Island Cares remains the respected leader in addressing hunger on Long Island and is an active partner in both statewide and national hunger relief efforts through their affiliation in the Food Bank Association of New York State and Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest.) Long Island Cares works with close to 600 human service agencies across Nassau and Suffolk Counties providing emergency food; sponsoring programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency and educating the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. They are dedicated to promoting the food welfare of Long Island; to raising the nutritional standards of our communities; to bringing into closer relation the food resources and food needs of the community, and to encouraging food self-reliance for all Long Islanders.
