Regarding furloughs in our public schools: Maybe I don't know what others know, as I have not seen this suggestion before, and maybe my solution is too simple.

Kailua and Lanikai residents, I empathize with your problem. There are several halfway house in my once upon a time safe neighborhood which are residences to convicted sex offenders who have been released from Halawa Prison and OCCC. I have a teenage daughter who I do not allow to go out unchaperoned because of the danger. You can go online and check them out.
I'll trade you; your B and B's for my Rapists.

Yamasaki's letter is right on point about giving up on education, and short changing the future generation expected to lead Hawaii after Yamasaki has gone after accomplishing very little of value during his existence on planet Earth.

This is typical of the Democrat encouraged apathy of Hawaii which remarkably is so closely aligned with the French tactic in war: WE QUIT.

Yamasaki is PROUD to know that Japan provides 240 hours of class instruction to their future, while Hawaii short changes its future with only 168 hours with this stupid furlough of intelligence.

Cheapskates like Yamasaki probably were the first in line with Obama's Cash for Clunkers program, and used that money to buy a foreign import. Guessing from Yamasaki's post, I would hazard it was a Toyota.

Jan Olson of Sunset Beach talks about raising more money for education. Not needed, there is plenty of money. As Perry & Price have frequently said, HI spends about $13,000 per child. About 50% of that goes to the school. Problem is the BOE/DOE suck up the other 50% in overhead ways that cannot be fully accounted for. Imagine that, they can't accurately account for about $6,500 per child. State Auditor Marion Higa has said the same thing in her audits. The buck should stop with Pat Hamamoto, it does not. Until fraud, waste, abuse and cronyism is eliminated, students suffer. No more of my tax dollars for schools. Teachers should stop buying school supplies so the size of the problem can be seen. Just another day in the Nei.

Lloyd Y. Yamasaki is absolutely correct. If the furlough Fridays are such a problem, then how come all the other days that are wasted during the school year aren't a problem. And why isn't the fact that Hawaii ranks near the bottom year after year not a problem. Seems like a lot of stink is being made about these 17 days (spread over 2 years) but the bigger problem is being ignored.
I believe the missed classroom time argument is a red herring for the real issue of "who's going to watch my kid" problem.

If there is no money why did teachers attend a conference in Las Vegas this past year?

I think the government has done a fantastic job educating the children.

More proof that government can run a business better than.....well....business.

We promise to run the Health Care business just as well.....except for the current rationing of course.

I repeat....their will be no rationing of Health Care!

Yamasaki's editorial was right to an extent. The education of Hawaii's youth has been sacrificed for decades now and nobody noticed! The buck stops at the doorstep of the BOE/DOE administrators. A complete overhaul is in order-but who are we? Just people of no consequence! Those administrators showed their ugly heads a while back, when some schools were given the correct amount of $$$ per student compared to some schools were given only a portion of $$$ to instruct the children. And guess what? Those schools scrimped by and survived. The corruption in the system will only continue until the residents rally and put a stop to this maddness.
Oh, yea, advising teachers to stop spending their own money to provide school supplies jsut goes to show you the mana'o of our teachers passion for their these children. Back up!
