I haven't been up this way lately, but I was up in marienville today, and went back to beaver meadows lake. I noticed a lot of purple rectangular shaped bags hanging from trees along the road. What are these for? Somebody suggested butterflies, but we weren't sure.

Here is what i know about them .They are a trap, with a sticky substance. Used for locating a tree-killing beetle. This beetle lays its eggs in the bark of ash trees, once the larva hatches, the larva works its way threw the tree, kindof like tunneling, its screws up the water and food supply to the tree, then the ash tree eventually sufficates, its a process of 1-3 yrs, for the tree to die, this beetle has killed 70 million ash trees in the U.S. There is a pic and more info at this web sight. ithacajournal.com
