How can they expect to ask the citizens to pay when times are so tough right now? Businesses are closing, people are loosing their jobs, homes etc. Can't they wait until the economy gets better?

This and other projects to build Town Center is about the future of Virginia Beach. This city is the largest populated city in the state and understand this: It shocks people from other parts of the country to hear this! The reason. Virginia Beach is such a disparately built city and to top it off there's no train, plane or bus stations to boot. So the hope is, I believe, is that Town Center will become the heart of the city & develop its own "urban/inner city vibe" to become the funky alternative to the Ocean Front scene for residents & tourist, I believe!

"I think the success of Town Center speaks for itself," added Oberndorf....

Wow Meyra..A Success???

Is the success youre talking about the barely filled Studio 56 lofts, the BARElY filled Cosmopolitan, the BARELY filled Westin Residences?? A friend of mine who lives in the Cosmo took a look at some of the Westin residences but decided to wait to buy because his lease at the Cosmo was not up. The Westin offered to BUY HIM OUT OF THE COSMO LEASE.
Success?? Is the succes your talking about the retail shops that have come and gone. ie. Blue Taxi and the Brooks Brothers 346? The main Brooks Brothers has had to replace 346 because 346 couldn't hold its own. I imagine Brooks Brothers is praying their name alone will keep them afloat(346 is the lower level brooks bros).

And there are STILL empty retail spaces under the cosmo...

hmm Yeah Meyra, success my toe.

Now is not the time for this broke city(1.2 Billion in debt) to piss away taxpayer money.

i'm all about expanding the towncenter. but a hotel....for what or who? hampton raods needs a sports franchise. a real franchise (soccer doesn't count). there needs to be a bigger attraction to the area besides a beach and a shipping museum.

With our citizens dying on substandard inadequate roads why are we spending precious $$ on buildings that are not needed at this time and not the death trap roads in the city??

Does the city councill want to be impeached? Are they ever going to represent the citizens or will it always be the developers and tourists!!

let's get ready to have our homes assessed at an even higher level than they are now, to cover this deficit. i mean come on.....my assessment is already $150,000 higher than the value of my home right now. i am sure council will tell me my home is valued higher though, just to get those beloved tax dollars! pretty messed up!

While I amno longer living in Virginia Beach but still own a home there (it's for sale) I honestly don't think another apartment building and hotel are the answer for Town Center. While there is a new fine arts center there is really no place for casual entertainment other than the movies. My children(all of whom are over 20) and I often felt that an establishment such as Dave and Busters would profit everyone in and around the Town Center and likely the entire Beach area. It offers dining and enjoyment for all family members. It's something to look into, Mayor and council members!!!
